My work vehicle shelves project

Hey Everyone,

Wanted to share my DIY project I had.

I wanted to turn the trunk of my Subaru into a work van. So I had this Idea of buying plywood and building some shelves for all my gear… Here it goes:

The drawings:

The trip to lowes-

The project begins…

And then this project that I started( that kinda became this big ordeal that I wasn’t expecting, also realizing I’m not a carpenter, I’m a window cleaner, and I don’t have proper carpentry tools…

I finally finished:

Lesson learned?

I’m actually not as awesome as I thought… Haha

Anyway. Thought I’d share.

Turned out awesome! It’s amazing what you can do after you buy all the wood, get to cutting, and realize you have no idea how to make it work.

It always looks awesome in my mind.

I’m not a carpenter either. That’s why I stapled carpet to my shelf unit. It’s why I use 50 tubes of caulk every time I do trim work.

Oh watching real carpenters work is like sorcery. They measure then cut and it fits perfectly! That blows my mind.

Hilarious! I wasn’t expecting that last picture. I bet you’ll be happier with that setup anyway. Looks nice and organized. Plus you can move stuff around if you get tired of it.

Exactly. It feels more legit

That’s kind of like a “goal in life” for me.
My neighbor does stuff with me, and I’d have a cart loaded up with like 6 planks of wood,
a couple 2x2’s, and some Liquid Nails, f-ing duct tape…

 • he walks out with like 2 2x4’s and exactly 6 nails for the same project.

I’ve actually got a lot better though, I’ve actually become fairly capable over the past few years.

Thanks for the smile. I saw this thread earlier but wasn’t logged in, so I wasn’t expecting the final result pic.

The tools really do make the difference. We can imagine what we want and how it should work.

 • and it should/would.

But if you are like me, I would be herky jerky and use things like a butter knife as a flathead, it just wont come out the same.

I’ve actually spend some time and money to buy some nice saw’s
and all of a sudden it looks like I actually know what I’m doing!

The one saving grace of not having them previously, is that now each time I buy something new, they have pretty nice technology, standard.

Shit, my saws all have lasers. My dad’s don’t have laser’s.

 • so suck it, dad! :stuck_out_tongue:

Only my sharks have lasers.

But watching a carpenter is just voodoo. We had a flood in our basement and after getting everything fixed and replaced, the insurance sent a guy to do the trim. Stained trim. I wasn’t paying too much attention until he asked me what I wanted to do because either the door was straight and the wall crooked or the wall was straight and the door was crooked. I just said, do whatever. He used some quarter round and you would never know there was a big gap between the door and the wall. And it was all stained trim!!

When I do trim, you’re going to get white and for a small house I’ll need a case of caulk. Caulk covers multitude of sins.

+1. I kind of surprised myself with what I could do with the nice circular saw my wife got me for our anniversary last year. Such as the nice sweeping curve on the back of our shelf. You can see a little of it in the video: http://windowcleaner.com/vBulletin/wc-equipment-vehicle-setups/38226-infinity-cleanings-scion-xb-window-cleaning-mobile.html

pro-tip: setting the depth of a circular saw to just deep enough for the material you’re cutting, will allow you to make large curves much more accurately and quickly than trying to use a jigsaw. I only use the jigsaw for the little stuff.

Funny u went to lowes and there’s a Home Depot bucket in the picture. Nice looks good to me. And probably a lot cheaper than the plywood thing. Home Depot rocks!!!

Yea I much prefer Home Depot. Except the lowes is 5 mins from home and Home Depot is 35. :-/
