Need some suggestions on direct mailing a postcard

I am planning on sending out a postcard mailer but am wondering the effectiveness. I had a professional photography business for 23 years and did direct mailing for that many times and it just didn’t seem to have that much of a success rate. Do you think it is easier to pull people in for window cleaning over a different type of business? Is it the nature of direct mail, or are you having great results with your direct mail. Suggestions and comments are welcome.

Useful key words or phrases are also helpful. Try EDDM or direct mail when you use the search function. It will return tons of good reading.
