I don’t know the laws in your area, but I’m pretty sure you don’t have to do an LLC, you should be able to do a Sole Proprietorship which can be free to start as long as you use your full name in your business name (that is the way it is here in Oregon anyway) and if you don’t want your name in the business name you can register a DBA (Doing Business As/Assumed Business Name) which is only $50 here in Oregon and is very cheap compared to starting up an LLC or Corporation. It really depends on what your preference is. LLC means “Limited Liability Company” and one thing people like about an LLC is that if you happen to get sued or you have debt and you lost the lawsuit or you couldn’t pay your debt, they are limited as far as being able to come after you personally and your personal possessions, however, that is not absolute, sometimes they are still able to come after your personal property and that of all the members of the LLC. A Sole Proprietor is personally responsible for any lawsuit and debts you may have, and they can come after your personal property. All that being said, if you have great insurance in place, that should help cover you with most job related lawsuits, but hopefully you won’t have any. I would recommend the Joseph D. Walters insurance that WCRA members get 25% off on. I went to them and they saved me $250 and they know what they are doing beings that they specialize in Window Cleaning and Power Washing insurance.
Hope that helps… and welcome to the forum by the way.
No, I wouldn’t have legalzoom do it for you, it’s easy and less expensive to do it yourself. Here’s the website for MN Secretary of State Minnesota Business and Lien System scroll down and click on the very top listing called “Assumed Name”, you can register online and it only cost $50.00. Let me know how it works out for you. Have a great day and take care!
Another quick question I live by a border town next to north dakota and I got calls for jobs over there do I have to get another doing business as/ assummed name in north dakota? If so would I pay taxes if I work in another state?
