Hello everyone,
I am brand new to the roof cleaning game and would like to learn everything I can about it. Is there a standard mix ratio that I can use on every single job or does it depend on the size of the roof? What are the solutions to use? Which ones are safe for plants and grass and bushes? Thank you in advance for all of your help!!!
There are plenty of guys who clean roofs over here, but Rob’s direction is right on. There is plenty on roof cleaning there.
I just started this year and have been primarily mixing 3 parts water to 2 parts 12.5% SH, and a surfactant. This puts me at 5% actual SH going onto the roof. Sometimes it seems that certain areas need further application, but as I said I’m new and haven’t perfected my methods yet.

That sounds more like a house wash than a roof mix. I’m not sure how you made out on the roof if it was only lightly stained but I think you typically want to be around 50% SH with the 12.5%. With that said, cover, presoak, rinse, keep the plants from dying. There are worthwhile threads to read on the subject at PWRA. Too cold now to be shooting roofs.
Yeah what Jared said is 50% mix of 12.5% SH. That’s how roof cleaning mixes are typically calculated… By your math, Jared’s mix would be 6.75% SH (50% mix of 12.5%) but that is typically how roof mixes are discussed.

A fifty % mix is the strongest you will ever want to use, start weaker, like 70/30 and progress from there. Go over to PWRA for more info. On a side note there are no effective products out there that won’t damage plants. The key is that with the right techniques you make them safe.
We have literally done millions of square feet of roof cleaning.
