Nickel Sulfide Inclusion (Spontaneous Breakage)

Well, it actually happened to me. Some time after we left the (new) client’s house, the curved, tempered glass on her sun-room shattered.
She contacted me via email. Not accusingly, but definitely looking for answers. I gave her some info on NSI and promised to be helpful and said I would do some research on how best to resolve this.
Anybody else have this happen? If so, what did you do? What’s the best avenue to take?
This is a large, rounded panel on a sun-room (“solarium”), so I’m guessing it’s a rather pricey piece of glass.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I dont know a ton about nickle incursions but I think I remember that the glass breaks in a certain way. So a picture , especially a close up one would probably be a good thing to have. I think that regardless it falls on your back and replacing would probably be your responsiblilty. I havent been in business as long as most of the guys around here so they might tell you other wise. I would replace it though. How old is the sunroom?

I’ve had my own window spontaneously shatter. Strange thing

walegac, good for you for supporting your customer through this, but I don’t see how it could possibly be your responsibility. It’s a manufacturing defect. The manufacturer should be responsible. If they refuse to address the situation, I think the next option would be their homeowner’s insurance. The insurance company may in turn decide to go after the manufacturer to try and make them pay. Or they might just pay for it themselves.

But the last person who should be paying for this you or your insurance company. Chances are, your insurance would refuse to pay for it, since it wasn’t your responsibility! JMHO

Hey guys, thanks for the response. Yes, to the best of my understanding, this really isn’t my responsibility. However, it’s an awkward situation to be in – explaining to a new customer that their glass just “spontaneously” broke.

Tim, the homeowner took a bunch of pictures and sent them to me. Although the pictures are not very good quality-wise – they do seem to indicate the classic NSI pattern of cracks spider-webbing outward from a central point.

I have insurance through J D Walters.

How old is the porch? Is it possible a bird or rock hit it?

10-ish years old, I’d say.
