PW a Composite wood deck

I have never done one before. Is there anything special I need to know.

Yeah, don’t power wash it.

Well I figured 4,000 psi wouldn’t do that much damage… jk. Just doing some research and checking what people use. I was going to wash with my house wash ( 2 gls 12% 3 water 2 cups of simple cherry) and use a sunfrog sealer.

Just want to make sure this is ok to use.

No, I really meant "don’t power wash it."
You need to use very light bleach, soap, and NO pressure. Gently scrub it with a soft brush to clean it and rinse with a garden hose. Any use of a pressure washer will void most composite decking warranties. Go easy on the bleach or you will fade it.

Oh sorry thought that was sarcasm my bad. Ok I’ll use a weak mix but fading is not an issue. She got a Trek composite deck when they first came out and its faded all to hell. She just wants the black spots out and some grill grease out which I told hear I’m not sure if it will come out all that well.

Thx Thad

Bleach isn’t going to touch the grease.

You could try to sell her a stain job if that’s in your skillset.

I wouldn’t do it, but it’s an option for you.

timber tech says you can use a psi washer on their decking. and you can stain/seal it
when I was installing decks we went with timber tech because it seems much better than most of the other brands

Hey Thad,
At what ratio w/ the bleach/water/soap?
Thanks man

Start really light then add and test until it starts cutting the funk.

Thanks Thad

It is my opinion that composite decks really suck.

There was some litigation (class action?) going about TREX and the product fading and de-laminating prematurely but I have not researched it …

Thad or others:
I just looked at Trex deck today and there are grease stains. Any suggestion on actually getting that off?

This may sound silly but if all else fail’s you can try Magic Eraser, that is an amazing product. It got me out of a few jams

Hey John, I use magic eraser a lot in office cleaning. You really think it would get grease off composite?

I would try as many cleaning products as you feel you need, there are some sites with different cleaning techniques with a on-line search, would not over promise that you can get them out. Looks like it should have been cleaned soon after spilling to avoid permanent staining.

Try dawn

I have used “Outdoor Clorox” on a composite deck that was discolored from mildew and algae. I never got all of of the stains out but the original color gray decking did brighten up a lot. The owner was happy that it was no longer a slip-n-slide but he was a little disappointed that it didn’t look new again. He did buy the house as is and it had sat vacant for several years surrounded by trees. I’m of the opinion that they suck as well and would never buy one personally. Once the black spots are embedded I don’t think anything will get them out. My dilution ratio was strong with the Clorox and it still just removed the green and brightened up the deck. I wouldn’t pressure wash it.

what’s the SH% of clorox? Isn’t it 6%? So if you diluted that down even further, possibly it wasn’t strong enough

Does types of decks are noyhing but a PITA to clean the alge & grease get into the fibers. Yes Larry you are right about 6% clorox
