Hey have a question Do we as window cleaners here in the state of California need to have a contractors state license? If so what category does that fall in on the state license board? there is no such category for “windows” or “maintenance” I have a few customers that have been asking and i wanted to get some facts about this before i respond…help me out a bit Thank You
Customers seem to feel comfortable when they see licensed and bonded. Kind of old school. But if you have a business license you are telling customers you are legitimate.
There was a period of time when one was required to have a state contractor’s license in CA for CCU WC’ing for jobs $600 and above. It fell in the specialty of window treatments.
Looked it up yes it’s there what’s funny not one contractor I have done work for has ever asked. Some of the companies I have done jos for are multi million dollar companies. I guess it’s not widely known,so it may be a good thing to pursue to differantie
D63 is for Post construction cleaning, not post construction window cleaning. Its for the removal of drywall and building materials. D63 will be asked for under certain conditions when performing construction final cleans
License Classifications - Contractors State License Board
[h=2]“D63 - Construction Clean-up Contractor[/h]
[h=3]California Code of Regulations
Division 8, Title 16, Article 3. Classification[/h]
A construction cleanup contractor cleans up and/or removes from building grounds or structures any debris resultant from any construction project including but not limited to: concrete, dirt, scrap lumber, plaster, drywall, any paint or adhesive products from windows, floors, ceramic tile and bathroom fixtures.”
Three key points to notice:
“any debris resultant from any construction project”
“cleans up AND/OR removes”
“any paint or adhesive products from windows”
So the fact that window cleaning is a small part of this activity is the reason why many get away with not having a D-63. But if you google “D-63 window cleaning” you will find many window cleaners that do have the license.
Mark so take it you are more aware of this right now, what if its not post construction clean up…like just regular window cleaning? It shouldn’t be needed then right?
Yes I suggest a d63 is for window cleaners in ca, then what is the test or is their one, and if not then what type of fees, does my insurance go up if I am certified d63?
I would recommend to get D52 - Window Coverings Contractors license. Most of the people I know that do window cleaning have D52 classification which is limited specialty.
D52 - Window Coverings Contractor
A window coverings contractor installs or applies decorative, architectural/ functional window/glass treatment or covering products, including but not limited to the following: all types of materials and fabrics that make up louvers, shutters, Venetian and mini-blinds; residential or commercial draperies and screens; expanded metal window and door guards; plastic film window treatment and/or any other window treatment applied for temperature control or as a screening device.
