I lost a job to the Rain X man. Don’t know who you are , but would like to ask you … WTH are you doing
I was up against you once before , an I buried you an got the job. This time I just wasn’t in the mood. I just told her I don’t do that, an that I never herd of it being done on windows… “ Oh ok I’ll call ya back”. Ya I’ll hold my breath
No big deal things are mad busy . The job was nice though
Any one in your area hearing about the Rain x man. What’s he doing Clesning the windows then applying Rain X, or is he putting it in his water.
She was ready to book , then all of a sudden … “ Oh do you do Rain X. Lol .
Rain what ? Oh boy , Ma’am did you get smitten by the snake oil salesman ?
I turned down a $10k a year account because someone (someone active on this forum) Rain-exed their windows to the point that they were uncleanable (at the customer’s request, of course) lol
I cleaned their properties once and said thats all I’m doing, good luck.
The power of the lie never fails to amaze me. There is so much disinformation out there. The public really needs to know the truth. Which is why I have just now taken a turn with my blog. Focusing on educating OUR customers through a monthly bulletin published inside of the blog. Just did the November issue on the Destructive Power of Acids. I should write one on Rain X and other sealants, what real use do they have? Of course they have a use and a purpose. But most of the time they really do not have any.
In this case sounds like your competition caught you being lazy, you lost this job yourself by “not being in the mood” and more so by not understanding what the product is or even if it would be beneficial for this customer. Your competition is using Rain X as a selling point that’s working.
Rain X and other sealants serve a purpose, I wouldn’t say it’s for every customer. We use primarily on areas where hard water stains develop.
Sealants dont damage glass, simply remove and usually wear off very quickly with any mild soap.
I’m not offended by being called lazy. If that’s your opinion.
I’ve been working in this business for quite sometime now , an been in the business for about the same amount of time as ownership.
Rain X is a joke , an there is no need for it on someone’s Windows.
Secondly I offer window cleaning if that’s not what they want, then I’m ok with them moving forward.
I’m not going to change things up because my so called competition is doing something , or even pricing in a manner different than mine
Could I have explained to her it’s not benifical. Or try some of my salesmanship on her to convince her to go with me. Ya I could if did better, like I said you get to a point we’re its tiresome.
Go use the snake oil salesman I’m ok with that.
To take to this to another level. I was reading on the PW forum. They were talking about brick work. One guy chimes in an says , “If your not going to offer the whole service then why even do it at all “. Meaning cleaning , Sanding , an Sealing “.
I could do nothing , but laugh at that !!! Ok buddy let me stop cleaning pavers , because you feel I should offer the whole process.
Thousands an thousands of dollars later all I offer is cleaning .
So sorry Dude!!!
Jeff … Every customer that calls you will not be your customer. Solo is different from running an operation with crews you need to keep busy. That’s the beauty of this business.
I like chads business Model . He works part time half days an demands top dollar. I’m similar , but I will work an 8 hour day An will work 6 days a week if need be.
I don’t feel a need to offer restoration, or sealing windows whatever you call that Rain X stuff, which I never herd of anyone doing until the onetime 6 years ago when I buried the guy that offers it to a prospect that became a customer.
BTW , That customer is no longer with me she called me 3 years later anI told her the price went up. She couldn’t get off the phone with me fast enough. Probably went back with the snake oil guy !!
Jeff quick question. I bought a bottle of that stuff long ago for my car windshield. Cause that’s what it’s for. I never used it !!
What’s the process with this stuff. Is it labor intensive?
The guys price was the same as mine , but he was doing the Rain X.
So is the Rain X man doing more labor than me an making the same amount of money ?
Just tell the customer, “Rain X is a brand name, the actual formula WE use has the trade name of GG4 and has been specifically designed to clean stationary glass panes.” leave it vague and go from there.
Educate your customer on how to avoid hard water spots hitting the glass. Drip irrigation for bushes and plants near windows and walls eliminates staining spread by broadcast sprinklers. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Rain X will wear off and hard water spots will continue to stain ignored and unmaintained glass. I bet they mop their floors more than once or twice a year.
And they expect a window cleaner to charge just a few dollars to “clean” it off. I drop the drip system (pun intended) to them to put the problem squarely in their lap as it is THEIR sprinkler hitting the window week after week, month after month, year after year. So a little education for them. If they choose not to do anything about it so be it.
I just tell them the sprinkler is hitting the window and I’ll do the best I can to get the buildup off without using harsh chemicals. They’re fine with that.
Rain-X is organic and will dissipate off the surface in 48 hours or so. Explain that if a sealer only last 2 days it’s hard to justify charging the customer a temp add on. If you have a FAQ on your website, add it to the list and explain why it’s not a value.
If it is an organopolysiloxane. Depends on whether or not carbon has been used in the compound/polymer. In this case it would seem to have been. According to the Wikipedia, " Rain-X’s primary active ingredient are polysiloxanes, the primary one being hydroxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane.[11] The polysiloxanes have functional groups that bind to the hydroxyl group of the glass surface." Did you notice the word dimethyl stuck in there? That is the organic part. I also found this link you all might enjoy.
