Remove white residue on window?

hi guys/gals. I hope you don’t mind a newbie asking for trade secretes. but I’m wondering what you guys use to remove what looks like white oxidation or just hard water deposits that pretty much cover 60% of the glass surface?

is this a steel wool candidate?

yeah that sounds like hard water deposits to me,personally I like Bio-Clean the stuff works great at hard water removal.Just rub it on and clean as usual

I use bronze wool and a scraper in conjunction w/ Slayer powder, Bio Clean, and OneRestore in that order. If it’s silica deposits you won’t get much improvement and then I’d recommend a Glass Renu scratch removal system.
Whatever you do make sure to charge more since you are restoring the window not just cleaning it.

Also CC-550 has the most serious health risks of any of the chemicals a wcer could run across. It can lead to heart failure and death. If you choose to use it make sure you take no chances and wear every piece of PPE at all times.

i love bioclean, it works great on hard water stains, ill use steel wool w/bioclean

Here’s a link to a post by Troy Liposec detailing these dangers http://windowcleaner.com/vBulletin/window-cleaning-safety/6258-hard-water-spot-removal-hf.html . I think you also personally know someone who recently went to the hospital because of this chemical, yes? Here’s a quote from wikipedia on the dangers of hydrofluoric acid -Hydrofluoric acid - Wikipedia

Chris, just an FYI the link to the MSDS in the post Tony linked to is broken

You and I both know that people make mistakes and sometimes forget to wear safety equipment. With other chemicals you experience some bad effects but w/ this particular one you can loose your life. New wcers coming here should be made aware of just how much more dangerous this chemical is, not have it’s dangers glossed over.

The wiki link I posted clearly tells you that hydrofluoric acid can lead to cardiac arrest. Did you read it?

you would have to bathe in the stuff to cause heart failure. FYI: he didn’t go to the hospital because of the chemical alone. He went to the hospital because of the chemical reaction between the CC550 and LIME for an extended period of time 8+hours. The chemical is perfectly safe to use, but one should wear gloves when using it especailly if your removing lime from windows and try to avoid bathing in it.

Maybe I’m a little gun shy from being in a coma from a chemical exposure in my past, but if the window is so bad that you need to use hydrofluoric acid on it, I just give my customer the name of a great glass company in my area and tell them I would recommend that they replace it. It just doesn’t seem worth the danger.

Well said Brett. I’d recommend a scratch system or replacement.

you’re not helping your customer to recommend they replace glass that can eaily be restored in a few minutes with an extremely mild acid. Maybe you should just tell the customer about CC550 and let them go from there.

I can see why Brett would be concerned - he told us he survived a chemical exposure coma. In the article that Troy Liposec had a link to the guy used a capful of HF to take a stain out of his jacket and nearly lost his arm. When we are using HF it’s always going to combine w/ lime, magnesium, calcium, etc so it’s never just the chemical but the chemical cocktail that we are exposed to.
I respect you Linda but I don’t think it’s a safe chemical to use.

Then don’t use it to restore windows. We will continue to use it because it is very effective and the ability to restore glass sets us apart from other window cleaners in the area who don’t do what we do.

What would you recommend for cleaning toilet bowls http://www.hescoinc.com/Msds/ly74278.pdf Obviously lysol toilet bowl cleaner is not a safe chemical.

Its not straight hydrofluoric acid. Its not dangerous if you use common sense and wear PPE.
