Rookie Question

Howdy everyone,
Just wanted to ask a quick and simple question. If you are doing 2nd floor windows [and up], and these windows tilt in; do you clean them from the inside and limit ladder work outside, or is that “unheard of in the biz”.
LinO.

Most double hungs tilt in, but I’d say most cleaners including myself avoid cleaning from the inside… much more difficult to do a quality job. I wouldn’t say it’s unheard of though, to each his own

I had a job today that had two sets of DH windows that were going to be dangerous to get to w/ a ladder. They tilted in so after doing the rest of the outs from the ladder I went in and tipped the last ones in. Quality was not an issue.

I’m w/Tony if theres an issue of safety or obstructions and they tilt in I’ll do those from inside, but otherwise its easier and quicker to do from outside I think…customers seem to think that it would be easier to do all from inside, but drapes, blinds, furniture, and grandmas knick knacks all make the inside more of a “pane”…

Half and half. Mostly always if it’s 3 stories.

Just watch out for those drips that suddenly appear out of nowhere a soon as you put the window back into position.

Hey Sharen,
I was thinking that was the case, but didn’t know for sure. Thanks for the time, and info. Sometimes just hearing what the veterans in the game are saying, is sweet relief to the new guy on the block. Thanks 4 B-N there. LinO.

Tony,
Needed and received the good advice. As the N.K.O.T.B. I see this site as communication gold. Today I am a Miner of the gold. I do hope to one day by a distributor of it. Thanks again LinO.

Hey Taylon,
Thanks for your Quick response. I appreciate you lending your experience and advice to this valuable communicative tool. LinO

I understand they’re touring again.

Beautiful View,
I’m pretty sure that me and the top of a 3 story ladder are equal to water and oil. not a good match, and they don’t mix. So I’m with you all the way on that. And I’ve noted to take extra care on the edges. Thank you. LinO

I avoid tilting in windows as much as possible because of the risk of cracking them or breaking springs or other mechanisms.

Tilting windows in is a last resort for me. I don’t mind laddering up to 3rd story windows but usually do them with water fed pole.

great question

I usually tilt 3 stories because most times there are only 2 or 3. If theres more then I’ll grab the beast and climb up.

I am old, fat and lazy. I will ladder the outsides because that is the fastest way to a quality job. I will do outs from inside if there are obstructions or walking on a “delicate” stone roof.

It takes longer to clean an outside pane from the inside, unless the windows are side by side where I can clean the left by reaching out from the right.

In the Picture below I clean this entire building from the inside except for the middle 4 palladium windows where I go out on the ledge…

Cleaning from the inside is a higher skill of learned skill… If they tilt in doing a good job should not be any harder ! You just have to be aware of your process and be sure to check your work !

Reach-out cleaning is the same, some times cleaning in an a backwards motion or opposite of you facing it. All that is required is to re-apply learned skills to a higher skill and then maintain a quality standard which can be done,no reason for non-quality !

One the biggest problems is maybe there will be furniture or other objects in the way and that can stifle the process ! A second problem will be how to tilt the window without breaking it or scratching pait or gouging the frame ! If your working over a street like I have to in the pictured building be sure to not drop your tools, I use a wrist attached lanyard.

Still learning will have a curve but once applied you’ll be higher skilled and closer to being if not already a “Son of Ettore”…

Be safe and go for it !
