Safely transporting ladders

Hi,

Can someone please give me a link of how to safely transport ladders (especially extension ladders) on one’s vehicle (their roof rack) including how to tie down ladders with bungee cords etc.

A video would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Mike

I assume you don’t have a locking ladder racks.
I would not use bungies but use ratchet straps and loop them through the ladder so it cant slide.

here is the best way to transport ladders. Pick up truck ladder rack w truck tool boxes and drawers - System One integrated truck equipment: aluminum ladder racks, truck racks, van racks, truck tool boxes

I agree with Logan, Mike. Many years ago I used 9 bungee cords in various places to keep my ladder from moving to and fro or right and left. Very dangerous when fastening and removing them. Ratcheting straps are way stronger.
Sorry, don’t have a video.

Being safe with ladders is key.while using them and transporting them…so i think thats cool u started this post to get the right info about straping your ladders down correctly to insure your safety and to others around u

Funny you posted this, my crew lost an extension ladder on the freeway today. By the time they went back and got it, it had already been run over.

Im just glad no one got hurt and I don’t have a lawsuit on my hands…

Ratchet straps. Sometimes on an extension I’ll us small bungee cords just to be doubly sure it doesn’t feel like extending on top of my car.

The same goes with ladders in the bed of a truck, not just on a rack. A hard turn or a minor fender bender could send an insecure ladder into your cab or another vehicle and turn a minor incident into a tragedy. Bungie cords are not secure enough. I secure mine with ratchet straps also. I also cable lock them so they don’t get stolen.

I agree with the ratchet straps. I was using some large twist tie things I found at home Depot that are supposedly designed for this purpose. After twenty miles on the freeway my ladder had slid back a full three feet!
Got some self retracting ratchet straps for $15 at harbor freight. Bolted the ratchet end to my ladder rack. Works awesome. It’s like the van and ladder are one unit.

i use dano hookems

Heavy duty ratchet straps and a rope lock (so I can park it without stressing).

I strap them to the roof rack of my Explorer with no problem
