I have a client who has mirror film on the exterior of all 147 windows of a commercial building. It appears the previous window cleaner must have used some sort of abrasive that scratched the film on 3 windows. Is there a product/process that I can use to buff out these scratches? I know there are products like glassrenu but can they be used on windows with a film (at least until the film if removed)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If it’s just the film that is scratched there is no recourse other than to replace the film. GlasRenu is for glass, not film. Glad you have that size of an account.
Thank you for your reply Jack. I have not tested this glass but if it is float glass with tin side out, do I have the same problem as with film coating?
I have come across this questions plenty of times before. The answer is NO, the system does not work when there is a film on the glass. You will need to remove the film/tint first before repairing the glass. The grinder is going to grind off any film that would be on the window anyway so you can do yourself the favor and just remove the whole piece in the first place.
What I see happen most often is that you will take the film off, repair the window, and upon your customers request have the film placed back on whether your company does it, or you hire that work out to a film/tinting company.
I hope this helps you out. If you have some more questions feel free to ask away!
Its probably that reflective coating on the glass. I doubt if its actually a “film”. Did it turn black wherever they scratched it? It might be that pyrolytic coating. Basically the same as a mirror but exposed to the air side. Popular in the 80’s but not very durable. I heard it can be cleaned but its a pain and once its scratched, its done for.
