Screen Magic oily/greasy film on window

About 4 to 5 weeks ago I used a bottle of Screen Magic on 13 of my 19 screen on my own home. The first thing I noticed was that it has a oily/greasy like film on the screen frame after I wiped it off. I kind of reminded me of the film left on the dash board of my car after using Armor All. Over the last few weeks we have had some rain in our area. Well today while taking down the christmas tree I noticed some spots on my window, it look like water spots. I opened the window and pushed in the latched that allow the window to swing down into the room, I ran my fingers across the window and could feel a oily/greasy film on the outside of the window. The first thing that came to my mind was the Screen Magic. Sure enough all the windows which had the screens sprayed with Screen Magic had this oily/greasy film over them.
Now I might have sprayed to much or did not wipe the screens down well enogh. The one thing I do know is that it did not rain for about 2 to 3 weeks after spraying the windows.
Has anyone else had this problem

Yes, in my experience SM does transfer to the glass. The next time you use your scrubber on those windows you’ll probably notice they’ve become hydrophobic as well. Using SM sparingly may help, these days I only use it on interior screens.

Use the search feature, this has been discussed a lot.

As far as using S.M i have not really came across that problem … I have noticed that it does collect a lot more dirt / dust on them in about 2-3 months when i go back to my monthly customers. So now i have to scrub them clean then apply the S.M again then repeat the process over in another 2-3 months. The stuff works awesome on the sun screens as it brings back a nice dark luster compared to a dull sun faded look that they once were. The dust problem here in Arizona is horrible … even on a calm day the dust is still swirling. Now i can see why the house cleaning industry stays so busy here .

I wrote a complaint about s.m. last year

I agree with you there are definite drawbacks

Need to drop the word magic

Sounds like to us, you maybe applying it way to heavily.
We use it on every screen window and sliding door screen we clean and never had any issues other than fantastic results!

This is what we use to apply screenmagic to our customers screens.

Pump Sprayer

                                                                    $11.99

Important tips to follow:
[]Use this pump sprayer or similar kind
[
]Adjust the tip so the spray is just misted on the screen (a little goes a long way)
[]We spray just the front side of the screen, wipe the sprayed side first and then the other side
[
]You may need additional cleanings on either one side or both sides of the screen (depends on the amount of dirt)
[]Coat the screen from the bottom to the top
[
]Wipe from top to bottom
[]Wipe the screen first, then the frame
[
]Don’t forget to clean underneath the banana clips
One other thing we’ve noticed after future cleanings w/ Screen Magic on the same residence is that the screens stay cleaner longer and are easier to maintain upon repeat visits.

We love it, the customer love’s it … screenmagicusa what more can you ask for?
We clean most average size screens in 6-10 seconds, if there are screens the same size put 'em back to back and spray both fronts.

This SAVES TIME!
And after all, we know

we just did a hotel over 200 screens turned out like CR@P

I don’t use SM but have a question: aren’t there only certain screens you can use this stuff on and, if so, is it possible the poor results come from using it on whichever screens aren’t recommended?

Just wondering.

I use that same sprayer and IT DOES TURN WINDOWS HYDROPHOBIC. I’ve got a few dozen houses to prove it. Makes WFP cleanings more time intensive.

Yep, every house I’ve gone back to, top pane is fine, bottom pane hydrophobic.

We used screen magic on a very large retirement community last year with 400+ screens. I loved the speed in which we could clean the screens as well as the resulting look of the screens after we had finished. We returned 6 months later for another clean and I did notice the product had transferred from the screens onto the windows. The windows were very greasy to clean which resulted in having to change our water buckets very often. The jury is still out on screen magic for me. I really do love the look of the screens after they are cleaned but the greasy window results are hard to overlook.

First, I would like to thank everyone for their input, second, the jury is still out for me. I loved the way the screens look, not so much the windows after the rain. I will admit I probably spayed to much, I had them stacked four deep like folks had suggested. Will have to wait for more rain and see if it happens again, don’t want to use a hose, want it to be all natural effect like last time.

Did you use the flip-mitt after you sprayed them?

The flip-mitt?

Yes.

Not sure if its still available. I use a microfiber car wash mitt to go over the screens after applying SM

I’ve covered this before but I wanted to answer the questions that have come up. I’ve heard of just a handful of report on this with WFP’s. We have had literally thousands of screens cleaned and just a couple of reports of this which lead me to believe their is something else that is interacting here. I’m not sure what it is but it seems to be isolated a couple of window washer and WFP’s. We have been trying to find the common thread but it’s really hard to sort through all the variables.

Here’s what we do know. Screen Magic by itself does not make the glass hydrophobic. You can test this yourself as we have countless times by just spraying it on the glass, let it dry and then try and clean the glass. Before you spay it on though make sure the glass is not hydrophobic to begin with.

The other problem seems to be with Screen Magic transferring onto the glass. I have spoke with a lot of people on this subject and their are only a couple of things that can cause this. Most common is over spraying Screen Magic on the screen/frame. Spraying more does not make it cleaner. Second most common is not wiping down the frame with a towel. Not wiping down the frame on both sides leaves a massive amount of Screen Magic that would take a very long time to dry which would then transfer to the glass when you put the screen back on.

The third reason would be the mixture of Screen Magic if you bought the concentrate. It really does need to be mixed at a 9:1 ratio. To much or to little water (usually to much) will diminish it’s effectiveness and it’s ability to dry in a timely manner.

As always I appreciate all input positive and negative. This helps us to keeps our customers informed about issues that might help them use our product to it’s full potential.
