Securing stack ladders

I currently sport a 4runner and I have been shoving 4 1/2 stacks with seats down. I used to strap a extension ladder on the rack. I want to start securing the stacks on the rack rather then having it unsafe in the ride.

I’m assuming 2 different stacks (2 and 2 1/2) would be the way to go or should I stack them 4 1/2 laying on eachother? Also should I be putting some sort of rubber mat or towel between each piece to stop it from sliding (metal 2 metal)?

Thanks & Happy New Years!

Need some ladder locks too

I stack mine (4) sections on top of each other…on top of an 8’ A-frame ladder…sections are 1st-4th…base…then 6ft…then top…then shorter 4’ on top…all set within and not perfectly stacked…so the railing of section 2 sits against the inside railing of the base…resting on the rungs…each section sits the same. Two cinch type motorcycle tie downs to secure and a cable lock through them all…they never move.

The Hook Em Dano locks need to have 2 sections on top of one another, I tried just with a 2 sections top and base connected together (long ways) and had to disconnect and stack 2 sections on top because of threaded rod hook not being full threaded.

I secure 3 sections on top of each other. On the middle one I wrap 2 black rubber bungees around it about 3 ft apart. That is my rubber between them to keep it from being metal to metal. I also bought some 1/2" elastic in the sewing dept. of Walmart and tied pieces around the ladders near the pins. When I transport the ladders I tuck the pins under the elastic to keep them from bouncing around on my roof. Works great.

Thanks, cable lock is that simply a bike type of lock?

Thanks, the bungee spacer is a great tip?

Yes, it’s a bike lock…

I would say that if you have anymore than two ladders on your roof you should go side by side to avoid having them catch more wind than they need to and to keep them from being so high and having to reach up so much to get them. I am all about using ratcheting tie-down straps and cable locks to keep them safe a secure.

I have been locking my 6 foot base with my 6 foot top, then I lock the two 6 foot centers together and I place both of these combos flat on my ladder rack as if I’m carrying two extension ladders. You can either place your 4 foot section on one of these combos or throw it in your truck. This has been working really well and I find it easier than trying to stack the sections on top of each other. Hope this helps.

I took a few quick pics today to demonstrate what I had posted earlier.

Bunjee cords, ratchet tie downs, and secure padlock ties. Sometimes I stack my ladders on my 93 Audi 90s!!!
