So I figured this is the best way to get advice from a wide variety of people. We looked at a 2016 Honda Fit at a dealer yesterday with 30,000 miles. There are no service records though. And during the test drive the check engine light came on. They’re going to check that out. So, are we overthinking it? Or should we go with our gut that something seems strange and continue our search? We’re just wondering how important it is to know that a car with so many miles in one year has had regular maintenance.
pretty sure that any Honda dealer can type in the vehicle details on the dealer computer to see what/if anything its had done to it .Thatd be worth having done it wouldnt cost much if anything
a Honda with a check engine light showing is very unusual at any age
Personally, I would move on. I agree that 30k is unusually early to get a check engine light. Especially a Honda should be better than that.
It could be no big deal… But then again it could be a sign of trouble.
I also love how dealers always seem so surprised when something like this happens. Yeah, sure they didn’t know about it already. No idea, I’m sure.
Passed on it. Guess that looking for a Honda at a ford dealer was a bad place to start anyway
The salesman called and said the check engine light was due to the gas cap not being tightened. Which I know can happen in a Honda. It happens sometimes with our CRV, but usually right after we fill up (the test drive car was almost on Empty). Also I bought the CRV new and remember the first time that happened was well over 30,000 miles.
Check-Engine light can come on for any reason, even as simple as a vacuum hose or loose gas cap - or more serious.
It is worth $100 to take any used car you are interested in to an independent garage and have a “Stem To Stern Inspection” before you agree to buy it.
If the dealer isn’t okay with that? Go fall in love with your next vehicle somewhere else.
They could just clear the code and do nothing . It would be nice to know what code was tripping the check engine light. there’s a lot cars out there…
