So, this past Saturday I decided to drop off some EDDM at a local post office. 787 pieces, 8 bundles. I personally wanted to drop them on Saturday with hopes of targeting a high end neighborhood with delivery on Monday.
Now before I go further I can tell you that most of the post offices we have dropped at have been pretty good about taking our EDDM and some are even a pleasure to deal with. This particular post office however always seems to be surly when we drop. So I walk in to the post office at 10:03 am with my one box and as luck would have it I am second in line. I wait patiently for the gentleman ahead of me to mail his parcel and when he finishes I step up with my one box and set it on the counter. The postal employee behind the counter looks at me as though I just dropped dog turds on the counter. She picks up the manifest and carefully goes over it taking her time. As this is going on other patrons are getting in line behind me. She proceeds to take out all 8 bundles and inspect the facing slips. I’m pretty sure I notice a look of contempt on her round face. She looks up with her dark piercing eyes and tells me that I am missing the paper work with the route number. What? I calmly tell her the route numbers are on the facing slips and point them out to her. She repeats her assertion that I missing paper work and asks me to step out of line so she can wait on the other customers behind me. I calmly tell her that I will not be stepping out of line and that she can either take a check for the EDDM that I have on the counter or refuse to take them. I also tell if she refuses I would like her name so that I can address this problem with the postmaster. Before my very eyes she transforms into an oversized Raptor that is going to come over the counter after me. Although I had shoulder surgery back in December I segwayed the PT into going to the gym and am fairly fit these days. I think I can take her in spite of the 35 to 40 pounds she has on me. We stare each other. There is now about 8 people in line behind me. She snatches up the manifest with her talon and tells me that will be $114.52. Victory is mine.
As I drove out of the parking lot I couldn’t help but envision my precious EDDM being tossed in the dumpster.
Anyone else have obnoxious postal service stories.
WOW! I knew some usps employees had attitudes, but this is crazy, could you imagine if this is the attitude we had as window cleaners toward our customers.
Anyway, I’m doing door to door flyers, at least now I know what to expect when I do eddm.
Those freaking Raptor bitches hey, I meet one of them and sent 1500 post card and didn’t receive one call. I ask one of my customer in that area if she receive my postcard and she never did. What a waste of money. Printing and postage 220$ in recycling. I did my part for the environment
Its on that sheet i posted a link to:
“Mailpieces and bundle makeup must be prepared in
accordance with the current USPS mailing standards
applicable for Every Door Direct Mail – Standard Flats
o Separate mailing into bundles of 50 pieces,
identified by a Facing Slip (bundle identification
label) that contains the Delivery Route
information and the number of bundles in the
mailing. (As an option, mailers may print the
5-Digit ZIP Code and Carrier Route number on
the top mailpiece in each bundle in the
address area.)”
We have always done 50, i suppose it does not matter, but the USPS sheet says to put 50 pieces in each bundle…
This begs the question though… whats to stop them from throwing them in a dumpster somewhere? Other than fear of losing their job? Seems like the program lacks accountability. I’ve had some turn up at houses that were not on routes I mailed, which makes me wonder where the rest of them ended up.
I have had excellent results with eddm. And my interaction with our local post offices has been incredible. All the clerks are helpful, and the post master has even taken time on numerous occasions to chat with me. They even let me bring in my mailing and tell them what day of the week I’d like it delivered
It’s unfortunate you had such a bad experience. I’m sorry to hear that.
On a side note, when eddm was rolled out, I believe it had to be bundles of 50. But this spring the local PO told me it could be larger bundles. But since we use jumbo postcards, We’ve kept ours at 50 to make it easier for the carriers to deal with.
No worries, soon they will be sitting on their chubbie butts collecting government pensions while UPS delivers the mail at half the price.
Disgusting arrogance.
The regs state bundles of 50 but some post offices were allowing 100 for convenience. I was told that they are not supposed to any more, but some still are.
