Sorbo Docket

Hello all,

It seems like a smart idea, but the Sorbo docket does not receive much conversation. Is sharpening your rubber a waste of time? Not effective?

Why is this a product that is not worth the expense?

EM

It is a great idea and it works good. I had one along time ago. I thought about buying another one. You have to follow the directions to a T or it won’t work quite right. If I remember correctly it actually works on regular rubber as well but you can’t sharpen them as much because the channels aren’t adjustable. I think its worth the money with the price of rubber and shipping going up.

Probably will be our next major investment purchase.

What are your projected yearly savings?

Since it’s a major purchase, you’ve probably researched break-even point factoring in initial purchase and time spent cutting rubber.

For the same investment, joining the WCRA will have a much greater ROI, IMO.

You would be money ahead to just cut down the rubber for the next size channel and not spend the hundreds of dollars on one. It’s not just the cost of the tool but the extra time it will take to “resharpen” rubber. Especially since most of my rubber wear in on the ends not the middle where this tool is obviously designed to work.

Regarding wearing on the ends and not the middle, I the entire rubber wears but the ends
wear the most and show it the most. When you are using the squeegee more pressure is put on the ends.

That’s true Merv. However, unless the rubber gets nicked by something a simple cut down to the next size and I have a new rubber. The wear in the middle is negligible.

somewhere i read that new rubber is slit to give it the sharp edge at the factory. maybe using an industrial version of this tool?

I think that is because in the smaller sizes a sharp edge is not as important.
With a smaller squeegee you can press down evenly more easily and cut off the water.
In other words, the smaller it is the less the edge matters. Eventually it does wear out anyway of course.
When you cut the edges off, the edges look good, and looks are enough with a small channel.

it actually sharpens the whole blade, the corners and the edges and only takes 5 minutes if that, at the beginning of the day to have a fresh blade for the day. one blade can be used 12 times.

I Sorbo he actually designed it for the larger blades because they cost like $4.00 a pop which adds up quick, if you use them all the time like he does.

Sorry, but the way my corners wear from fanning just trimming off an 1/8" wouldn’t give me the sharp corner that cutting it down to the next size does.

Cutting off 1/8" might not work but try 1/4". Take off 1/4" and the edge looks great.

You might be surprised. But that’s the benefit of the docket. It allows you to have a fresh blade every day where as without it you go as long as you can until the corners and center are worthless. With the docket it allows you to trim the blade before it gets to that condition. Not to mention like Merv said you can just trim a little more off. You could go a whole year on two dozen rubbers or less.

Your not going to get rich off of it but it helps save a little cost and it keeps you from having to reorder rubber all the time. Its also nice if you use the large channels like the 36 inch. I hate carrying extra items on the truck so the less I have to carry the better. I keep my oversize channels on the truck with the blades in them so when I need them there ready to go. I hate to carry the extra blades for them because I always seem to lose them as I only buy a few extras. They get nicked a lot or I lose them. Plus there 4 bucks a pop. Having a docket would be nice to keep the over sized blades trimmed down and not have to carry extra blades for them.

I don’t have a docket because its pricey but I would love to have one. I may get one in the near future.

Is anyone actually using a docket?

I had one also some how I lost it but it was great wish I still had it.

Still plan to invest, thought it’d be easier to jus send Sorbo ALL my used blades and let him do the sharping for me, yea right as if that would ever happen
