Sprinter van owners

I’ve seen just a few old threads where members mention purchasing a Sprinter van. Curious if any current or former Sprinter owners can chime in with their views on reliability, utility, etc.

Thanks, in advance.

I’ve been wondering the same

I’d buy one if I could get it cheap enough. From what I’ve seen they last forever. I’d seriously have to weigh a $4,000 caravan against a $10,000 sprinter. I’m not sure they give you $6,000 more value, especially since junk yards are full of caravans so parts are pretty cheap.

But yeah, I’d definitely consider one.

I use to drive one, good for residential at best. If you have to park underground forget it!

Fast food drive thru? On most of them forget it!

Chesebro who needs a drivethrough? With all the space, you could just put a fridge or a mini fridge in there

Then just call it a food truck! [emoji1]

Now that would be a unique addon. “Would you like a quesadilla while we wash your windows?”

So…anybody own(ed) one?

What sprinter are you looking at?

Second generation (2006-7), straight 5 diesel, 140" wheelbase, high roof. A replacement for our oldest truck, sort of as a van experiment.

We had a dodge, it was gasoline. It was pretty reliable, I put in 90k on it and then my boss and I decided it was good to sale it and replace it with another Chevy Express… I liked the space, but when going into busy city’s like Los Angeles it sucked not being able to park under structures and became annoying, but It might work for you, just sharing our experience with it. But just stay away from mercedez benz, those do break alot. As for diesel, its nice til they break- it will probably be a big repair bill.

Look into the ford sprinter with an ecoboost, very powerful and fuel efficient. That sprinter I would consider for all resi work.

i used to be a mechanic and fixed a few sprinters- without a doubt they were the toughest and fastest van going. there used to be a 313 [the 311 was the big seller] well the 313 flew along ,a rare bird cos was not available easily , but a veritable rocket ship

plenty of room for all the essentials

Anybody own(ed) one?

Steve I will be owning one soon and the reason is the fuel efficiency and the reliability. Problem is when looking for one everyone that are trying to sell their used one thinks they can get what they paid for it when new. I prefer diesel thats why I would go for the Sprinter you can also get the standard roof hight. Do your research and don’t overpay although it might be worth it. Thats why I haven’t pulled the trigger on buying one yet, but will soon.
Another alternative is the Ram Promaster or the new Ford Transit they both make diesels but haven’t seen in US market yet. Those are new vehicles and don’t know if you want to go that route.

Sprinters rust bad if you are in the north or Midwest.

I’m loving mine. I’m almost sure the engine and body redesign happened in the 07 model. I bought an 04 (long and high) a few months ago, and I only have 6k miles on it, but so far so good. Gets around 21 mpg diesel, which is great considering what I’m carrying. BTW, mine is set up for powerwashing, pure water windows (I carry 50 gallons), staining, and gutter cleaning. I can even get a 28 foot ladder inside of it! I did get sticker shock when pricing out a van wrap though, so I might have to settle for lettering.

Genaro no I went in a different direction because of the price issue for a used one in my area. Like I said they try and sell them for what they were brand new. I don’t play by those rules so I will wait for the competition to bring down the prices hopefully. My vehicle is good to go for a few years.
Jason

Yeah , I agree. I love the look, but the price is crazy ! Even for a used one
