Sratch Removal System for PolyCarbonates, Plastic,Perspex, lexan Needed

Hi Guys,

We are the users of the glassrenu system, but we need a system now for removing scratch damage from polycarbonates, plastics, perspex and lexan materials.

We have lined up 100 bus shelters that have polycarbonate panels that have been scratched graffitied. Polycarbonate here in Australia is more expensive than glass to replace, so anyone on this great site they help us here in Australia. If so can you send me an email with the details.

Thought SRP/Novus had the small $800 Surface Wizard tool available for “plastics” in combination with their [URL=“http://www.novuspolish.com/”]compounds.

I believe Alex has used the tool.

There have been several GlassRenu users who have had success repairing plastics (I have done a few personally) with the GlassRenu system. The big issue is that there are many types of plastic sheeting (Lexan, Delryn, Ploy-Carb etc) that each have there own characteristics (how hard they are, Melting points etc) and none of them are marked what they are. So because GlassRenu can’t Guarantee the results we don’t recommend using the system…

That being said… Start with a black disk and a speed setting around 2-3, monitor the surface of the disk looking for little balls of plastic, don’t allow them to build up as it will screw up the sheet. Once you are at the bottom of the damage, then pre-polish and polish. You NEED to keep a close eye on the temp, do not let it heat up too much.

I recommend testing one panel before committing to working on all of them. Lets see some pic’s!

Thanks for the advice Cody, what temperature is too hot, do we prepolish and polish as per glass surface.

I am testing a damage panel tomorrow so hopefully goes well, will have before, during and afters for you all.

Jason…

I wonder if the headlight lense restore kits are practical for this use.

the kit is pricey because it includes two pneumatic sanders. but you can buy just the discs and polish seperate

3m even makes the glass scratch remover paste.

They are all water fed systems, which creates lensing, all also the maximum disc size is 5". These are full panels not with one little scratch the scratches cover the whole panel.

Did you try your GlassRenu system? I would love to hear how it worked. Also any pics of the damage.

Hi Cody,

I PM you with pics and a summary of what we did.

Repair, Dont Replace…

Jason I would like to see how they came out as well…

Hi Chris,
The deep scratch we could not remove, we physically were grinding for over an hr, and it didnt get down to the bottom of the scratch. The material which had the scratch was perspex, softer than lexan. We did notice that when grinding the perspex it got real hot, and the hotter the perspex got the clearer the area became. Bizzaar… We even used the tan disk, and still couldnt get to the bottom of the deep scratch. It cleared up perfectly once prepolished and polished. Whats next? I dont know how to post the pics with this thread, sorry.

First, hello to all on the Forum. Curiousity killed the cat here and I used the 3m system in combination with the Glass Renu system on the headlamps of my wife’s Volvo. The 3m disc system they sell retail for the headlamps are pure rubbish. Two minute max grinding and they were down to wax paper. I changed to the blue grinding pad and then grey. The Glass Renu disc worked very well. I used the soft polishing pad that was included in the 3m kit and the Glass renu polishing paste. The only part of the 3m kit that was useful was the soft, spongee polishing pad. As this was my first attempt I was happy with the results.

BTW to the boys nearing the end of summer. The Reds looked average and the Crusaders and Cains worse.
