For VT, its pretty straightforward and relaxed. At least back when I switched to our current name in 2010, the bank simply changed the name on my existing business checking account. I don’t recall a registration fee of any sort for getting the DBA- it was all done right at the bank. In VT you have the option of registering your business name with the state in order to protect it from others using it, but that isn’t mandatory. I think it was a $50 fee for a 5 year registration.
Other than that, there aren’t many hoops for sole proprietors or partnerships. Pay your self employment and SS, etc to the Fed, and some self employment to the State. Some towns my have a small local tax as well, but there is no sales tax on services in VT.
I’m clueless about any type of corp- LLC, S Corp, etc. But after reading some of [MENTION=207]windowman[/MENTION]'s advice on the subject, I definitely plan on checking it out. With our small income it may or may not be cost effective to incorporate- we’ll see.
