Take your kid to work

Question for everyone…
My 11 year old daughter loves to go to work with me over the summer and to be honest she is pretty good at slinging a squeegee. She WFP’s my home and does a great job. I have only taken her to jobs i know are safe and i always ask the customer if they mind but i’m always concerned about the legal end of it. So does anyone know what the laws are on business owners and their kids going to jobs sites with them? Is it a state to state thing or fed law?

thanks

I have no idea. But the Amish do it everyday. Just tell them you are Amish.

LOL, Patrick

I’m not certain about any state or federal laws regarding this, however, in Florida, a business owner can employ a fourteen year old to provide very limited types of services with the written permission of the parent or legal guardian AND the school system (if applicable) that they attend. The restrictions are very strict until age 17 (if I remember correctly).
As to a parent “employing” their own child - I’m not certain if this would apply. But if it’s regular event, I’ll bet your insurance company would have an opinion.

At least when I was a minor, the state of VT and the fed had no problem with this. My parents started having me help in their cleaning business very early.

There were (are?) actually some tax benefits to employing your minor children, though I don’t recall specifically what. I’m sure the authorities have something to say about any “hazardous” work (ladders would most likely be out of the question, as well as using any toxic chems).

Done responsibly and reasonably, I feel that bringing your kids to work is just good parenting.

edit: Ironically, I always swore to myself that I wouldn’t be cleaning for a living when I grew up. I guess time will tell whether that ever happens

^ agree. American youth tends to be very lazy. We live in the “ME” generation.

Yeah, I take my son to work all the time. Of course he is 33 years old! Sometimes his wife goes along too.

Your customers are being polite.
I bet most are actually kind of pìssed.

Forget the ‘legal’ side… scruples should tell your that your kids belong at your house, not mine.

I would have to agree. Some folks might think its “cute” and others would be annoyed. I know I would. I’m hiring a pro, not a child. Leave them at home.

I started working for my dad at his store at 7. It was not cleaning the glass windows in his store, but it was close. I had to clean the raised platform just behind the glass where the merchandise he was showing was displayed. If only I had started cleaning glass then instead of at 40.

Not the same thing, not even CLOSE.

And for the record, I have no issue with the old ‘vacuuming for mom and dads cleaning company in the evenings.’

Other than that, I’ll look at your pictures and pretend I’m interested… but keep them out of my living room.

I take my seven-year-old with me to small jobs exterior only. Also do a nature center for free that she goes with me and all my neighbors and the customers love it, she does a great job. they appreciate her work just as much as they appreciate mine. But I would never bring her to work at someone’s home until she’s at least 14 with her working papers. Each job is less than an hour’s work and her pay is usually a bag of skittles and a push pop

seems like our future generation is in good hands.

If Im not mistaken, bill gates, steve woz, steve jobs all got started on their careers pre-teen.

In Tn legal age to work is 14, and my daughter LOVES to go to work with me, she usually raises blinds and removes screens, then replaces em when the windows are done. I honestly as time as moved along i think she likes being able to go to the mall and buy her own stuff, while her friends just walk

I started takin my son, was 14 at the time, to clean screens and sills. Tried teaching him responsibliity. I stopped because I was concerned with how professional my customers viewed my company.

Never had that problem, all my customers usually tell her how great it is she’s working

I think that is great. People need to lighten up on the political correctness and just live. We need to be teaching our kids what it feels like to do manual labor. IMO

Took my 13 year old to work today , getting him ready bye summer vacation . It’s not my first time I take him . But he finally got off screen and track duty and earn his belt with Boab . I think it took him about 2 windows to get it right . My Client even gave him a $20 tip.
