TDS meter not accurate

Hi all, My TDS meter on my cart reads much lower then my hand held TDS meter. The TDS meter on the cart reads 002 for the “in” waste water and the handheld read 2. The “out” read 0 on the cart and the handheld read 002.

Any idea how I can get an accurate read on the cart TDS meter? It says to calibrate with NaCl, Sodium Calcium?

Thanks,Cory

You can find meter calibration fluid online if you do a search HM Digital has their own brand costs around $5-6 may check on amazon.

Good ques. I looked at my hand held and says it came with a small bottle of solution Hi 70080 (800ppm@25 degrees C or 77 degrees) Don’t ever remember seeing a small bottle. Strange. Guess I can try the local water store and see if they have some. Best to make before meter gets weird. I will buy some and since my TDS is ok make a solution now while it operates fine. Make some and have the water guys test with theirs as a dbl check. Looks like pure water and add salt until at 800ppm. Can always keep it and good 0ppm in a jar to verify meter is still accurate. My hand held. Dip into 800 solution and adjust meter with small screwdriver until it reads 800, providing you know the solution is 800. Reads different adjust screw up or down.
Will order some though. Thanks for the thought.

TDS meters crap out after a couple of months. They just arent built solid.

Now you tell me. I’ve had the same one for a year.

Every time I try and calibrate my TDS Meters I can’t get it to work. I do not try anymore. One thing I have learned is that the electrodes need to be cleaned. The best way to clean them is to let them soak in rubbing alcohol overnight. I usually buy a new one about once a year because like Chris said above they just don’t last.

Buy a new one every six months, and write the date it entered service on the back with a marker. Don’t try to recalibrate, just toss them and replace. It’s a small price to pay.

Makes me think better have a spare. Have a second small red/green light but not sure what it is calibrated to . Could read lgreen at 20ppm or 3. Hanna warranty says 6 months. One of those need to get another but never worry about it until too late.

Great idea to carry a spare. I do now. I have also replaced the batteries before and it would have been cheaper to buy a new one.

Funny. Could just see the mud coming out from the pole end oozing out. Hey! TDS says 0. La La La

Makes me wonder now. Is this meter accurate. It could be way off and making 30 water the whole time. Would explain the spots. I will be sure and use 2 or maybe 3 if the 2 could be bad. A 4th could verify the 3 but if the 4th is bad too…:stuck_out_tongue:

Wish there was a paper strip like pools we could get an accurate measurement. Come on chem guys so us your magic, or is there an accurate one available?

I always have 2 on me.

I only care what’s going into and out if my DI… I used to always check with handhelds but now they pretty much just sit in the work van in a shelf. Replaced the cart meter last year, I think they are all built pretty cruddy and don’t really last. But anything under 10ppm is spot free anyway, so once we get it down to around 3 I happy
