So here’s what I have to say to that as a non-member of IWCA …
NO scratches bye me
It’s a shop microscope - you can google that - with my cell phone mounted on the eyepiece.
But I don’t use a microscope in the field to find defects for potential clients. (That might have been the other guy.)
I suppose I could, but nobody would pay me $1000/day plus expenses for a couple of days to decide whether or not any of their glass was defective.
I sure wouldn’t do a hurry-up job for free, like some try to do with scrapers in corners.
If any of that glass you’ve been scraping for the last 3 weeks was poor quality tempered glass with a defective roller side , I don’t really believe there were no scratches.
Maybe you should go back and check for time-delayed tempered glass scratch growth, like it shows on the cover of AWC Magazine.
Gary the Glass Detective
“A detective with class, for your defective glass”
or
Gary the Scratch Sleuth
“Call this detective, if your glass is defective”
^ those are free, if you want to use them…and I can understand if you do. Sorry, I don’t do logos.
He can just use his beard for a logo.
You kids might benefit from actually thinking this through.
Unbelievable!
Now I’ve heard it all.
Anyway, Rob - none of that glass you’ve been scraping for the last 3 weeks was poor quality tempered with fabricating debris on the roller side?
Not even if you go back and check for time-delayed tempered glass scratch growth, like it shows on the cover of AWC Magazine?
something like this?
Just curious Gary. Your experiment with “scratch growth”… You mention one anecdotal example. Have you tried to reproduce the event? I believe the scientific method requires that results be repeatable under like conditions before a theory is considered fact.
Maybe i missed something and this is has already been covered, if so I’m sorry. Not doggin’ you, but I think it’s a legitimate question.
excatly!
mm, you have waaaaaaaay to much free time.
Now get out and start cleaning windows, lol.
Thanks for asking.
I wasn’t conducting an experiment - just trying to photograph this time delayed chipping that’s already been proven - by glass scientists in the mid '90s.
Pretty sure I cited the article Anton and Cook published in the Journal of the American Ceramic Society earlier, and provided a link to a diagram other scientists have used to show how it works. And I gave an example of a major glass industry study where they waited 14 hours to allow this time-delayed chipping to occur before taking their photos.
I put a lot of work into trying to get good before/after pictures of the exact same spot - found several the I knew had grown, but I didn’t get good “before” pics of the exact same spot. (Or couldn’t find the exact spot because it changed.)
I wanted to nail that, because I didn’t want to end giving scientists in Finland any mistakes to snicker about.
This one I talk about the most is one where I got incredibly lucky - I was actually watching when it happened 45 minutes later - and I heard it happen, too.
Anyway, I use that anecdote, because it’s a good one to tell window cleaners.
I believe I said earlier, any glass scientist worth his salt already knows - and has for years - but I guess it’s not your typical glass scientist’s job to explain stuff like this to window cleaners.

Rob - you’re not answering my questions.
You said you’ve been scraping for 3 weeks and no scratches.
None of that glass you’ve been scraping was poor quality tempered with fabricating debris on the roller side?
Not even if you go back and check for time-delayed tempered glass scratch growth, like it shows on the cover of AWC Magazine?
Perfect
You win.
To bad they don’t teach psychology to bearded geeks. Your passive-aggressive approach won’t help you gain friends and its rather childish for a man with gray hair. I wonder if there is any scientific research on the behavior of children vs. the elderly.
Ok, thanks for reply. I saw you refer to the article but not link to it. Also, why are we looking at studies by ceramic scientists? Aren’t we talking about glass? Are they so similar that rules that apply to one apply to both?
At first I was impressed with Gary. But now I’m starting to think he is more about selling his magazine than anything else. The guys on this forum have been washing windows day in and day out. You can’t just come on here with some scientific info and then tell everybody who actually washes windows they are ignorant. That’s what I feel like you are doing. That and plugging AWC in EVERY other post you make.
