Thumbtack is good for business!

Hey everybody!

Thumbtack has worked very well for me this year. I’m looking for others to sign up with my link I can PM you. We both get free credits and its a win/win for us both.
How it works: You purchase credits individual or in bulk averages $1.68 per credit. The app bings in to your cell with job details and you give a bid or can pass. The jobs vary from 2-5 credits to bid (way cheaper than Home Advisor)
Thumbtack ranks on first page google, so might as well utilize them. My success rate has been pretty good in a competitive market. I’ve been hired close to 150 times and have about 90 five star reviews (see pics)

Well maybe in your area it does, but obviously not in mine.

Well thumbtack was acquired by google for $200 million, so good luck outranking them buddy!

I’ve had a few leads just using free credits on thumbtack. I’ve thought maybe it couldn’t hurt to test it out with a couple of dollars in the future.

What is your regular pricing like compared to your local market? We all can agree that thumbtack is an easy way to get a lot of jobs, but at what cost? The cheapest guys on thumbtack in my area are more than 50% OFF of my regular pricing. Not worth it for me, but that’s just me. I’ve gotten some good work on thumbtack but it’s once in a blue moon. How much are you having to discount your prices to land the jobs? Or have you discovered the ultimate sales pitch to get people to hire you for any reason other than being the cheapest?

Yes, you have to throw some money at it and see if you have any success in your local market. Then once you get reviews the ball starts rolling.

I totally agree with you, it can be hit or miss. Some people are looking for the cheapest but then others have paid me full price. There are some guys in my area bidding pretty cheap. One bid I didn’t get was for 30 windows outside only. I bid $99 just hoping to grab their attention and they passed. Asked why and she said someone would do it cheaper ??
I’ve also gotten $500 jobs though. My average ticket from Thumbtack is $200-250.

Any time you bid for a job online its lowest man gets the job. Anybody can be a “contractor” on thumbtack. Their “background check” consists of a phone call asking questions without verification. What a joke. I get 10 or 12 “leads” per day lately and responded to 3 of them with what I thought was a laughable price just to see if I’d get it.

Yeah it depends on the area you are in I suppose. Usually if you are the first to reply then sometimes they will go with you first before other bids come in. I did a $200 cash job today from Thumbtack, took 2.5 hrs.

It’s not the ideal way to acquire new clients but it can be helpful to fill the schedule. Sorry it doesn’t work for those of you that have replied, but it works for me haha.

Thumbtack is the worstttt… we’ve got guys around here that show up to job in wife beaters and Dodge trucks that look like they assembled them from junkyard parts. No insurance, $99 guys. No background check.

This is from Thumbtacks website. “You may also see a background check badge (meaning the pro passed a national background check) or a license badge (showing we’ve been able to verify the pro’s license through a public database).”

I’m glad it’s working for you because the only thing I despise more than Thumbtack is Yelp.

Yelp can just grab you if I’m not mistaken. You can have reviews on there and not even know. Is that correct?

Yeah. I’m talking about the paid marketing. Yelp is just an upgraded version of the yellow pages. I don’t have any reviews there, but I tried to delete my listing and was told absolutely not. It’s a public listing. I can delete my pics, my description, various other things, but the listing is there no matter what.

Chris’s book says to take Yelp by the horns and get the great reviews on there first so when someone does a rant or revenge type of thing you can already average it null. idk if i’m supposed to be sharing that stuff, but he gave it away…? @Chris delete this if you want obviously.

I read the book and love it… we already had a head start on Google and HomeAdvisor when I read that book so I continued to focus there since that’s where I was getting most of my business.

We’ve got 43 reviews between the two of them (and counting. Should have another one on Google today or tomorrow and there are 4 in queue at HA) and over 50 in total all 4.5/5 or higher with the exception of 1. If I get a bad review on Yelp it’s fake because my market isn’t really using Yelp and if they are I’ll gladly direct them to the other 50 until I get it removed. Yelp is America’s favorite place to complain so I won’t give it a minutes focus anymore unless I have to.

We used thumbtack a lot in 2016. It helped us enormously in our first year, with about 50 hires and several of those customers have become regulars who have referred lots of work to us. Then in 2017, we had 10 hires. So far this year, 0! Which is what I always wanted and now with leads priced as shown in the picture, it’s safe to say I’ll never quote a job again through them!

Last year we didn’t need the free answering service offered at the huge convention. This year has been much better and will gladly take advantage of that offer this year in Atlanta!
