Truck, Cargo Van or Minivan?

I have used trucks for 13 years, last year got a 3/4 ton Chevy express, the only regret is not doing it sooner!

What point are you asking people to ague with?
We all have to decide what works best for our circumstances and business growth.

Example: If all we are carrying are some ladders and hand tools, then it sounds like a v-6 truck would work well. Or if you are adding a crew carrying the same above mentioned.
If your want to carry all the tools needed for two or three guys plus wfp set up and equipment then that would be where a van would come in more handy.

I had a 2007 chevy express 2500 and it was set up with di tanks hose reels, water recovery equipment. A Pressure washer was in there it had a ladder rack that was a pita to deal with because my ladders were 8 ft off the ground. I installed a fold up jump seat so I could legally drive 3 people around. Now when it came time to register that van it was considered an oversized commercial vehicle and cost 4x what my pick ups cost. The gas that thing would suck down was ridiculous and i have business that requires a lot of driving. I can put all of that equipment and people in a 6 cylinder long bed pick up and operate at a lower cost.

This

This should be one of the top 10 threads: Truck Vs. Van for window cleaning

I still never get tired of it, though lol

IMO, it all depends on what your setup is and also the climate where you live. If you live in a sunny area and you also do pressure washing, you probably are best served with a truck.

If you operate out of a very seasonal area like Michigan or Massachusetts etc, you may like a van a lot better since all of your stuff is enclosed.

I also notice that the issue has to do with whether you operate in more of a rural area or more of an urban area.

If you clean windows in a densely packed urban area, parking an Astro van or even an Express will be easier than a longbed pickup truck. Plus all of your gear is better protected from random people who may try to lift something from your rig. I wouldn’t want to be parked in a downtown urban area with an expensive pressure washer in the back of a truck.

From my own experience cleaning windows in Seattle area and Cape Cod area, my favorite vehicles have been my Astro cargo van and my Subaru station wagon. The worst vehicle I used was a 4 cylinder Ford Ranger - even with a canopy on it, it was a PITA to access my cargo quickly.

If you do use a truck, getting the right truck cap (topper, canopy depending where you live) makes a big difference. The nice ones pretty much transform your truck into a van. i.e. the ones where the tailgate comes off and is replaced by the canopy’s doors.

I personally hate having to lower the tailgate and squeeze my fat a*** into the the back of the truck fishing for a piece of equipment.

That’s a nice topper right there. I should of bought something like that when I was working out of my pickup for the 10 years I used it; would of save me some headache.

Do this. Do it now.

i find the Peugeot partner to be a good size to get parked easily and decent weight carrying capacity for crew too

I currently drive a Mitsubishi Galant for both personal and business uses. I have a stepladder and two Ettore poles that go in the back seat, and all my towels, bucket, plus folding MT Ladder go in the trunk. So yeah…I myself am looking at getting a truck that would allow me to carry some 20’+ ladders and look a little more professional.
