I actually thought about this for past few days. I just ordered the EZ Pure Caddy and we have some pretty bad water here in St Louis, MO. I am going to be mounting and running my unit from my van so when the DI cartridge on EZ Pure starts to go bad I will be getting a 1/2 cubic DI tank and will hook it up after the EZ Pure and make it a 5 stage.
I will get a dual TDS meter and will install it after the EZ Pure DI and after the DI tank, so when DI on EZP goes really bad I will replace it with the DI tank and most likely get another 1/2 cubic and hook that up too.
This way, when my 1st tank goes bad I will switch it out with the second one, refill the bad one and put it at the end…and keep rotating it like that.
This might be an overkill but I want to make sure I get the best water I can and don’t want to run into problems in the middle of a job.
I mentioned it a few days ago, think I heard about it first from Tory (Elite W/W from S/D Cali. Seems like I have read a bunch about on the UK forums as well. Would be interested in getting one more tank and using it this way once my diy cart is welded up.
Ionic had a 3 stage DI system where each filter had different resins and could be laid on their side, not like the mixed bed resins most of us are sold which have to stay upright. So the first filter got it down to ~20 ppm and then there were 2 of the same filters in-line that polished the water - the first one will get it down to 0ppm then wear out more quickly and then the second one gets it down to 0 for sure and switch it around as you go along.
If you are using the usual Mixed Bed Resin, it is a 60/40 mix of resins with negative and positive charges.
If your TDS starts to raise above 10, you can pretty well assume one side of the resin has expired ( depending on your local water mineral content ) …
Making this a ‘worker’ tank will give you no actual gain ( except if you know at which point your water ACTUALLY starts to leave a visible spot ) …
If one side of the resin has expired (eg (+)ve ), the second tank will be doing all the (+)ve work, while the first tank is still removing the other charge (eg. (-)ve ) … But the second tank will still expire at the same point as it would have, had you just changed the resin in the tank.
This may not be the case if you work across a large geographical area and the water mineral concentration is significantly opposite in some areas to others …
The idea of 2 or 3 0.5 cu ft (12 liter ) tanks is ideal for DI only - and the inline TDS meters installed before and after the last tank …
I run a Ionic caddy 3 stage system. I absolutely LOVE IT! 2 years ago I noticed that the system started to burn through the DI cartridge about every 6 months or so. (About every 75,000 gallons of intake water)
Here in California we have chronic hard water.
About 1 year ago I decided, instead of tossing the “used” DI cartridge, I would keep it as a pre filter and add the new DI after it. (Easy since my whole system stays in my truck 100% of the time)
I am AMAZED!!! It has been a year and my “new” color change cartridge has not even shown signs of exhausting!!! I have used twice-three times as much water use than before, with no end in sight for my
Next change!!!
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND doing this to your system if you can!
