Looking to create a new vinyl for my truck and looking for some ideas and pictures or what cool designs you guys got. Right now I have a magnet and am looking to get a vinyl logo down on my truck. Also any got good pro and cons versus keeping magnets or doing vinyls??
ya thats what i have been thinking also as far as pros and cons. I dont have another vehicle so it would just be whatever. I dont have a logo or anything yet, kinda in that process now. I drive a white 2001 F150 supercab
I’ve had both vehicle magnets and vinyl lettering. I’ve known guys to lose a magnet off their vehicle and then have to go buy another. That doesn’t happen w/ vinyl. If you want to change something or add something to your vinyl it’s fairly easy to do. With a magnet you have to buy a new one.
Eventually I would like to get a truck just for my window cleaning business, and have it lettered. But for now I just use my personal truck for window cleaning, and use magnets. Since I started in 2004 I have lost one but I think someone took it off.
A couple of years ago I had a vinyl cutter and did my own but I got rid of it and I still have the ones I made. But a buddy of mine still does vinyl lettering and he sells a set of magnets for about $30-$40 bucks.
What I do is take my magnets off daily, my dad left some on his truck for awhile and they kinda messed up the paint on his doors. If magnets are left on for a long time they can get alittle bit of rust on them and mess up your paint.
I was discussing this with Bill at the IWCA convention in Atlanta last year. I was using magnets, and Bill suggested to ditch the magnets and vinyl the truck up. I was concerned about the vinyl fading the paint… but Bill said that he got such a better response out of the vinyl as opposed to magnets that it was worth it.
I did some research, and found out that fading isn’t really an issue anymore. I also found out that magnets can do more damage. You do have to take them off and clean just about everyday.
So I followed Bill’s advice and got the truck all lettered up (did it myself, actually). In a few months the white vinyl lettering has gotten 5 times the amount that the full color magnets got in a year.
Another thing to think about is legal issues. I obviously cant speak about everywhere but here in Massachusetts if your vehicle is registered commercial it must have company info permanently attached to vehicle. If its a commercial vehicle you can’t use magnetic signs. I’m pretty sure that magnets are a no no on non-commercial vehicles as well. Its not usually the cops that give you a problem its the damn meter maids in the city.
I have a black truck and white trailer. Everything when it comes to lettering for me, ad signs, magnets etc. Are cheaper cause it’s the most basic of colors. But they are also the most contrast and easy to read. GO BIG. As big as letters and numbers you can fit. It matters. Go into your local quick stop store IE 7/11 in the morning. Look at all the small lettered trucks and vans. Can barely read what they do. You have to park right next to the door to read their service/services. With a f-150 you can make them big enough to read from across a 4 lane highway. Keep it simple. I have some pics of my truck someplace on here.
I like magnets. For the price you can have them replaced 10 times compared to permanent lettering. My magnets are black backround and you would be hard pressed to tell they are magnets unless you are right next to them. I can pull them off when I need too. I don’t need commercial plates or registration because I can remove them. But if you dont remove them like once per month they will wear your paint down.
Got my new magnetics for the van today. Out with the old, in with the new. Since this vehicle serves double duty - work vehicle and personal vehicle - magnetics makes the most sense to me.
