Hey Cedric,
Check out the search feature, type in “roof cleaning” and you’ll find a good bit of that information.
All of those questions will be discussed in detail at the New Orleans Pressure Washing Class in February, also.
You can gain alot of info here and on Bobs site (Pt State). There’s forums dedicated to the subject. I don’t offer it, but there is $ in it according to the guys I know who do it
Hey Micah, i’ve searched but i cant find what i want in detail. what i mean is i’d like to know if i would buy a delavan 5850 pump kit from PT and a battery and a tank if that would be it, or if i need more stuff. what size tank should i get, do i need several tanks? its totally new to me so i have no clue. i also registered at ptstate but i cant ask any questions there yet, im awaiting to become a member there…
Attached a pic of the job i was asked to do, behind the house there are two sheds that are 300 sq ft each. The house is 2750 sq ft,
Yeah that’s the basic equipment, of course you’ll need hose and a spraying gun too. I’ve heard good things out of the Flojet Pentaflex too, so talk to Bob about his preference between that and the delevan. You’ll need water hose to keep plants wet, as well has a few tarps to protect the plants. Plastic bags to bag any downspouts… That’s the basics, but it will get the job done.
You’re pricing is good, you could charge even a little less and still make money if you really want the job. Remind them that roof cleaning is not only done for cosmetic reasons… it prolongs the life of the roof.
what would be the ideal tank size for that size homes, thx for your info btw!
For most homes a 40-60 gallon tank is sufficient. If you have to mix another batch up for a larger roof it’s not the end of the world.
An extra 55 gallon drum will work. I use a translucent one, so I can easily gauge how much mix is in the tank. I generally mix a fresh batch up on site, so the drum is empty on the way to the job, and I leave with it empty.
We use a 65 gal tank ( from Tractor Supply). This size tank allows us to do most roofs. Experience is the key to how much solution you use. You need to learn to spray the roof and let the solution do its job. When I first started I was probably using 30% more solution then I needed. Spray the entire roof and then come back and reapply solution to any areas that aren’t clean.
We always mix a tank before we leave the shop. I like to make sure the the solution is well mixed by the agitation of the ride. The only time I mix partial mixes is when it is the last roof we have scheduled for a week. I have found that by using the Softwash Systems Green Wash there is no mix strength loss in a weeks time.
Our current mix is 10 gals 12.5% sh 45 gals h2o and green wash around 40 ozs. This works for most roofs. On roofs with a lot of moss or on colder days we do need to make the mix a little hotter. Before using green wash our mix was 15 gals 12.% sh 30 gals h2o and a surfactant.
The best thing is the Green Wash is now available from WCR.
Cedric,
If you want to call me Id be happy to talk about the in’s and out’s of the business. I have 20+ years in this now and am happy to share. One can easily start this on the cheap for about $1,000.00. There are parts lists and diagrams at SoftWash Systems The Community
If you wanted to go totally PRO, system, chems, training, certs, advertising materials, operations manuals, etc. out the door runs about $10,000.00. It can be digested in pieces and everything can be bought here at WCR.
We also have the Softwashapolosa event on January 26 - 28th in Sunny Orlando Florida. There will be 12 classes, 3 lunch and learns and 3 afternoons of job site, hands on labs. These classes and labs will be taught by Nationally known industry pros like, Pete Marentay, Paul Kassander, AC Lockyer, Bill Booz, Doug Rucker and more. We will be sending out students in 15 passenger vans with u-haul flat beds on the back with bran new SoftWash Systems cradle skid systems on the flat beds. This event is going to be packed with everything you need to know to shave 2 years off the learning curve of this business.

There is also a lot of good Roof Cleaning Information here, as well as the opportunity to become Certified.
I would like to just thank you for that bit of insight

Could you just use a pressure washer on a low setting and not spray the water directly on the roof, or do you need special equipment to apply the solution?

Hey Atlas1, have you been over on Pressure Washing Resource yet? Tons of great info on roof cleaning and all types of exterior cleaning.
General consensus is, pressure washers don’t work for roofs. Period. (ok, maybe cedar shake, but that’s a whole other animal). Your down-streamer won’t be able to put a strong enough mix on the roof. You need a dedicated chemical tank and pump to get it on there.
I’ve been looking over there a bit. Thanks for the input…really just started considering this as an add-on, so I am gonna be looking at PWRCA a lot.
