My brothers National Guard unit is getting sent back to Iraq, and I want to be able to skype with him so my daughter can see her uncle. So does anyone have any suggestions on a brand or what the important features I should be looking for in a webcam. Thanks.
Standard web cam should work. Just try to find one that has a microphone in it. Makes it alot easier when skyping.
I use Skype, and have a Logitech webcam, Its really good, cost about $50 at Staples. For your daughter to see her uncle though, there will need to be a good cam on the other end
I was told to get at least a 1.3 megapixel camera which works well for me
My duaghter is in Costa Rico and we talk on video often. I have the Microsoft webcam 30 bucks with mic. Works great.

my wife is a webcam model and if you would like to talk give me a call. I can set you up with the best stuff to buy. There is a big difference between the webcams. My wifes cam looks like an HD TV, where as her older cams look like crap. You can call the number on my website if you want. you issue is going to come from their connection. The military will provide webcam access for the soldier in some locations it’s only temp access IE the VTC folks are comming next month. Other places the soldier might be able to have their own laptop in which cause a sat connection can be purchased that will help you greatly becuase the stream will not be competeing with anyone else. I had a buddy there who paid like $75 per month for a sat connection with his laptop to talk to his wife everynight. Worked out great for him.
I’m not a 100% sure but I believe he will be on a base in Kuwait. So I think the connection issue shouldn’t be a problem. I know he will have his laptop with him. I’m not looking for the best quality stuff, but I don’t want crap.
Well I know when my buddies were over they decided to pick up their own connections from an outside ISP offering satellite. Reason being is most connections on the bases are SIPERNET meaning they are classified. The open connection video rooms were mostly filled with people crying an talking over each other. Then as my friend put it, you get the guy next to you who get’s the message that his GF is leaving him and he hits the roof. They were all computer guys so it was easy for them to set themselves up with what they needed. Since he has a laptop if it does not have a cam built into it the Logitech pro 9000 is the best cam on the market today for the money. $99.00. Picture is crystal clear. He can also make him self some money or trade. My friends would barter their systems for money or things they wanted or needed. Also tell him to get a good air tight case for the thing. Put it in the case when not using it cause that sand get’s in everything. It’s like a powder.
He can start here with the connection. I would go with the highest bandwidth package. Even though it’s $99 per month, the soldier will have the money. They have nothing to spend their cash on over there and the $99 will be money well spent to be able to talk and see each other whenever you want. Besides he will be able to talk openly and honestly. If he is in a public VTC terminal he might not be allowed to.
