Do you have insurance? And how, if at all, did adding gutter cleaning affect that? And do you do anything else or just those two services?
I’m sure it’s already been said, but the thing that made the biggest difference for me is that one year I decided to CUT off the bottom 10% of my customers (in profitability) and then I raised my prices. Turns out I was probably losing money on a lot of those bottom 10% jobs. Don’t let it happen!
WFP all outsides period!
Upsells. Gutter cleaning, pressure washing, roofs, mirrors, chandlers, light fixtures, stain removal, etc.
Standard order of operations (no not math)
We have a outline of how every job is completed. Maximizes speed, efficacy, and order (meaning we don’t miss anything). Of course every home is different and the game plan changes but the theme is always the same.
Investing in equipment. Screen washer, water fed pole and system, indoor pure water cleaning, ladder pivot, etc.
Training. It takes time to become skilled and fast. I’ve been cleaning glass for 13 years and Im still getting better at it.
*** SELLING VALUE **** - This one is important (obviously). If you want to make more per hour, increasing your prices is a pretty damn good way to do it. How do you increase prices and still close the job? Sell the value of yourself and your company.
I only offer 2 services right now, Gutters and Windows. But I’d really like to learn to do pressure washing and soft washing. I don’t know anyone near me who does it, or at least anyone willing to show me. What is a ladder pivot? I just purchased the indoor kit and I’m still learning to wfp. But give it time and I’ll be making $75 an hour soon.
Better close rates for add-on services. We always check gutters when we are pressure washing or window cleaning. Statement like- “we took a look at your gutters and they are in need of service, since we are already out here we can knock them out for you at additional $$. Should we get started?”
Also always re-evaluate how you are marketing. Cut out what doesn’t work and reinvest more in what does.
I’m a big proponent of efficiency. That helps quite a bit.
Also, I have found that usually using a water fed pole on outsides nets me higher per hour rates, sometimes doubles or triples it. And now whenever I can use cleaning pads on inside windows and avoid using a ladder for high glass I do. These I have found to be enormous profit boosters for many of my jobs.
Over all of the things that i have done to increase my hourly income, this post has given me the biggest return on my time. Thanks Caleb!

Remember when your math teacher said, “you’re gonna need this in real life someday …”!
Since reading this post and the thread included, I have really changed the way I think of a “clean” window. I always was a perfectionist with certain things. I knew it was more for my own satisfaction sometimes than the customers. Letting that thinking go is important with something like this. This has definitely helped me with my time spent per pane. Thank you for sharing
All the thanks should go to Caleb @c_wininger for sharing his experience and knowledge with the forum!
I made an appointment with a marketing/SEO guy today. I am interested in diverting some of my work hours to tasks that I am more efficient at.
My short term goal if I hire a marketer is to be able to get enough clients to be able to afford a regular part time employee.
I have been contemplating this same decision. If I knew a reputable person near me who does it I would probably do it. How much is he charging you.
@Deanswc I will meet with him next week to find out his rates for products and services. I’m sure he has some flat rates but I am interested in performance based commissions too.
He was referred by the owner of the gym that I train at, he has been getting results for new clientele and he has been getting sponsors for the gym’s fight team, of which I am a sponsor too. Perhaps you could get some referrals from related service providers in your area, such as painters, landscapers, etc.
the biggest change in hourly income came from the customer factor.
the second biggest from switching mostly to unger pads and 3m glass cleaner and protectant.
another is switching to quoteflare for all quotes.
I chatted recently with @marc1and he also liked the customer factor. I need to check this out. I use Freshbooks for invoicing and basic bookkeeping but I am open minded and interested in other software.
many on here have raved about tcf for years. i looked at it last year but was put off by how different it appeared from what i was used to, also at that time tcf had no phone ability. now that i have gotten to know it and the second generation ios app is about to release i’m sold.
tcf does basic bookeeping, it was designed as a stand alone system for accounting, field service and crm.
it is not as advanced as qb but neither is fresh books.
kyle does not integrate with qb although he uses it, he just enters tcf totals in qb.
you could just give tcf reports to your accountant.
I used Quickbooks intermittently as a backup payroll and accounts payable user 4-5 years ago but I have been using Freshbooks daily the last five months so I am getting more proficient with it.The FB help staff at Toronto has been very easy to work with. It is easier for me to understand phone conversations with Canadians than it is with many of my Lower 48 brethren.
I need to learn more about integrating TCF with FB. Now that I have a helper I will have more time to research efficiencies.
