What is that gold stuff between panes that almost looks like wood grain?

I was doing a bid in the snow today and didn’t have an answer for the client.

Anyone know what the brown / bronze/ gold looking stuff is that is between the panes? Usually it looks like wood grain and points the same direction. I wish I’d taken a picture, but I’m sure you’ve seen it.

Can it be repaired by window restoration companies?

There is moisture or air getting in between the panes through leaking seals in the IG unit and causing a reaction with the “low-e” coating.

Residential.

No it can’t be repaired, certain Windows you can put a new igu in and not replace the whole window

It’s a blown seal.

I’m surprised this is the first time you’re seeing it. Just about every home here in the Denver area, including some multi-million dollar homes in Cherry Hills Village, has it. The worst ones are the windows that bake in the sun all day.

I see it often and tell the client it’s due to a broken seal. I just don’t know what chemical/corrosive process causes the oxidation, hence my inquiry here.

I work a lot of large homes on farmland east Boulder, and see the same.

How’s residential going for you? This weather has me on short weeks and bids in the snow.

It’s unbelievably busy! May is almost completely booked. We’re out in Palisade, CO for a few days to rest up before it gets crazy. Thankfully we’re not in the Denver area dealing with the snow.

Rescheduling with the weather always stresses me, but thankfully my wife has been helping with calls and scheduling.

@Ericehlers and I were talking about getting with local WCRA members and doing some kind of Co-Op/subcontracting. Maybe a window cleaning meet-up at equaled distance brewery or something like that.
