I have two ads in two local phone directories. Make sure yours is the largest… One does amazingly well and the other is a washup. Pick the right book and it WILL pay off…
I am really amazed the Phone Book Reps aren’t selling you on PPC and SEM. It’s all the rage. Look at YellowBook360 which now is Hibu. A solid friend was a regional manager for YellowBook / Hibu before leaving the company. My window cleaning company is a second to my Web Marketing Company.
He and I were direct competitors and also best friends who have traveled the country together. His company and all the other “advertising” companies out there realized how lucrative the residual income to internet marketing is. Also how much more effective to clients it is compared to Print Media.
When you sign up for the free online version of the yellow page directory it will get you a one line listing in the phone book. But it will also get you a sales call from rep trying to push online marketing and local print.
I know half the phone book reps in my area because we have had competing clients or we have worked together like I do with all the Hibu reps in my area. They sell my websites for me because they know their websites suck and will not convert into new sales. Kind of nice having that 10 person sales team out there pushing your products for you. Just sayin…
Which is what you want to do as a Guerrilla Marketer right?
No as you all know… Google released the Zero Moment of Truth Concept in 2011.
The reason I bring this up is because word of mouth (the age old favorite) has moved online.
The continued development and distribution of technology has radically changed the way consumers are buying—how they hear about products and services; how they research them; and how they make a final purchase decision.
Look at your local search listings. You see ratings in the Google My Business Local Listings.
Your clients are speaking their mind. Are you in control of what’s being said? More importantly. When you search for “your city + window cleaning” and you see the Google Local “Maps” Listings do you see other window cleaners with more reviews than you? Then you should be working on getting more people to your review pages. Don’t be shy to ask for a review and a referral every time you do a job. Make it as easy as possible for them to review you online though. Multiple outlets just in case they don’t have a Gmail, Angie’s List, or Yelp Account.
The best money spent right now is on making sure you have the synergy needed in your online presence to bring you referrals and win the zero moment of truth.
Be careful though. There are a lot of internet marketing companies out there that just sling services and don’t take a custom approach to really see what it is you need. They don’t have a proven system that can increase sales by 50% or more in 12 months or less like we do.
Just saying.
I’m guessing you’re not the internet marketing company?
I’d second google adwords. You need to put in some time learning how to use them effectively, but once you get the hang of it they’re very profitable.
LOL…
My company offers custom solutions. But that is not the point. I am not here to make sales for my Marketing Company. I have enough clients. I am cool. I do love helping others and if I can help someone here. I don’t mind doing it. But I am not here to make money from this forum.
I was one of the original members of this forum when it kicked off before the store was open. I have mad respect for this forum, for Chris and Alex, and for a LOT of the membership here.
Just because I stepped away from WC for a couple of years doesn’t mean I would come and disrespect the forum that helped me build my first window cleaning company.
Your NLP-Jedi-mindtricks aren’t working on me. Just saying…
Your funny bro.
I knew the band before they sold out bro

Haven’t even started advertising yet but I already regret getting flyers over door hangers.
Don’t worry about it. Just get them out then get door hangers. If that’s the only mistake you ever make you’ve done better than me
Shouldn’t say mistake. Regret. It’s not a mistake
Yeah, I don’t feel like it’s really a mistake, cause I got them at a decent price and can use them for my initial run, but definitely going to get door hangers for the next go around.
I also made the lettering too small on my magnet car signs for “window cleaning” but don’t really care as long as my company name and cell can be seen. It’s more of a temporary thing to look professional. Planning on getting a partial wrap sooner or later.
I don’t really understand door hangars, its not something I have ever seen here unless on a hotel room. seems a little creepy walking into someones yard to put a hangar on the door rather than a flyer in the mailbox.
What I can do is offer this advice, from what I have found with my yeah why not attitude the past few years I did several different options like bar runners/coasters, a small billboard, a tv commercial in a medical center. all of these were almost a 0 on ROI.
Now the only advertising I will run is that targets the potential customer in their home, not out at the bar or at the doctors or driving down the road, in this day and age while your out doing this or that the last thing on your mind is how clean or dirty your windows are at home.
When we were starting out a number of years ago we were putting fliers into mailboxes, thinking the same thing. However, after an infuriated woman called and threatened to press charges, I’ve NEVER done that again. People get pretty upset when you mess with their mailbox! Evidently, it actually is against the law.
When we wised-up and whipped out professional door hangers, we suddenly we’re rollin’
Quite a number of times I have heard about our door hangers, in a positive way. In fact, just yesterday we got a call from a very high end residence that wanted a quote. When we arrived to crunch the #'s she had told me that she got a door hanger and liked it so much she kept it for a while, when they were ready to have the work done they already knew who they were going to call! Needless to say, we got the job and are doing it in 2 days. This house alone more than paid for the 3,000 door hangers AND the time we paid someone to distribute them.

For anyone thinking of put flyers or anything in people’s mailboxes,it is illegal in the U.S. to put things in other people mailboxes
Wow, over here its the norm, if you don’t want “junk mail” as its known you put a sign on your mailbox and you don’t get it. Every week we get a log of junk mail literately a log 30 different flyers and catalogs bundled up with a rubber band weighs about 2 lbs. Thats just on 1 day then throughout the week we get about a dozen other flyers. Its probably the most popular method of advertising here.
Yo try to stop by my house with a"mailer" you might find something else… It ain’t fun either… We like our guns here in the states…
Honestly I personally would rather someone leave something in my mail box at the boundary of my property than to trespass onto my land to put a door hangar on my door knob. Also seems much more time consuming dealing with fences, gates and dogs.
Most of these are delivered when working people are at work so unless you plan to skip work to guard your mailbox with a shot gun, your out of luck.
I guess different parts of the world different social expectations( and legal requirements), I know most Aussies would not like door hangars hung on their front door knob, the only area I may see advantage is in apartment complexes.
I make sure my wife stays handy with the 12 gauge so I don’t have to be home all the time…
IF I had $500 a month I would get a Hatch site - Sparta • Luxury Residential Window Cleaning
& probably put every other cent into fliers.
