I use a whole house carbon filter, before the DI tanks and the tanks I use are large 9.5 inch by 3.5ft tall roughly, and yes I went from using 2 sets per season to 1.

Its far more likely you had lower incoming tds for that season rather than the carbon filter doing half the work.

Yes, by removing all that crap before the DI tanks it greatly improves the life of them.!! Especially for the chlorine…
