Which neighborhoods to target?

I’ve had some pretty good success so far with door to door fliers/postcards.

Several high end neighborhoods that I’m interested in NEVER seem to have for sale signs up; very nice, stable neighborhoods.

Is it worth my time to flier these areas, or if people have lived in a house for the last 20 years have they already figured out who they want to clean their windows?

Thanks!

No. And pass out fliers everywhere. Ok well maybe not in the ghetto where you might get shot or robbed. Old neighborhoods, rich neighborhoods, new neighborhoods are all potential customers.

I have gotten good results passing out fliers in upper-middle class areas. I was very specific in my prices. I put right on my flier that we charge $4 per pane (inside & out) and gave a sample range of what typical costs were for different sized houses. I think that people want information. If you just put “Joe’s Window Cleaning, Free Estimates, (555)-555-555” you will get a poor response.

I haven’t tried posting fliers in really up-scale areas yet. Truthfully, I’m kind of intimidated. The really upscale area 30 minutes from where I live is very insular - a real close-knit kind of area (it is actually an island). I have heard that residents there get upset if you flier. They also have a really high percentage of lawyers living there, so I am afraid of getting sued. I am about to send out a bunch of postcards to this area shortly. I purchased a mailing list, so I hope it has the do-not-contact people filtered out.

Wow, what would they sue you for? Do you kick their cat on the way up to the doorstep?

I would never do that, I love kitty cats. But, I think they have community ordinances that are very strict about postings and fliers. I heard that you can incur a steep fine for just tacking a flier on a telephone pole there. They have even banned franchises from their town.

Well I don’t advocate breaking the law, but if it’s just a matter of ****ing them off because they don’t like the working class knocking on their doors, then I say too bad. If people don’t like us, they can build a fence, post a sign saying no soliciting or move to Russia. I believe this is still a free country so I don’t like the idea of laws put in place to protect the wealthy home owner from us slovenly peasants.

Dang lawyers!

Hey did you hear about the vacationing lawyer who fell overboard while watching a shark feeding frenzy? Don’t worry, he wasn’t harmed at all. In fact the sharks stopped feeding and towed him back to the boat and safety! When asked about why the sharks did that instead of eating him, the lawyer replied, “oh that was just them showing professional courtesy”.

Ok that was bad…

Edit- I think I’ve hijacked this thread. Sorry, I’ll shut up:)

Stable neighborhoods can be already ‘set up’, but they can also:

be ready for a change
the last guy is slackin now
the last guy ‘disappeared’, won’t return calls, got a health issue, moved away, got another job/carreer
tired of cleaning them themselves
etc, etc

So true, nothing is locked-in. You never know unless you try.

$4 per pane? Does that mean that a double-hung has two panes so that window is $8?

A pane is a piece of glass surrounded by a frame. A double hung is two panes.

And each pane has 2 sides. For us a double hung in and out is a pane count of 4.

Not for small double hungs. The $4 per pane applies to the large homes I clean. In the larger homes almost all the panes are pretty big.

For example:

<a href=“Photo Storage” target=“_blank”><img src=“http://i1137.photobucket.com/albums/n514/greenj26/00001-home.jpg” border=“0” alt=“Photobucket”></a>

I would only charge $4 for a small double-hung like this:

<a href=“Photobucket | The safer way to store your photos” target=“_blank”><img src=“http://i1137.photobucket.com/albums/n514/greenj26/00001-window.jpg” border=“0” alt=“Photobucket”></a>

is that $4 for in and out or totall of $8 dollar for both sides being cleaned.

$4 total

When giving estimates over the phone, this is why we tell them we charge by the “window” and not the “pane.” From your picture I’d say thats two panes, but one window. So green, again you charge $4 in/out for that window?!

“total” means for all the glass in this picture. Both panes, both sides.

Yes, but some customers think that this is one window:

<a href=“Photo Storage” target=“_blank”><img src=“http://i1137.photobucket.com/albums/n514/greenj26/0001-bay-window.jpg” border=“0” alt=“Photobucket”></a>

Wow.

That’s somewhere between $6 and $8 in Raleigh for 1 window (2 panes, 4 sides).

Is competition that strong…or do you need to raise your rates???
