Window Cleaning Brush - Tool Talk Report

Sorry the video is long but I had a lot to say.

Nicely done Mark! It looks like we had a similar experience w/ the brush. I wondered how much more water your’s would hold but it looked about the same. Thanks again.

Hey Mark,

I have tried the brush method a few weeks back with a H/D Unger soft brush, the bristles are more flared and almost like split ends of hair, kind of like most truck brushes you find here at auto parts stores. It did not do the greatest job at cleaning the glass at the job I was doing, and had to go back over it with a steel wool scrub to get the build up off. I think the bristles on your brush are the answer, (you did a side by side photo of your brush and another) the H/D Unger soft brush was more like the other brush pictured. Nice video also!

I tried a standard truck wash brush last year but I didn’t like the results. this green nylex brush is definitely better suited to window cleaning.

Great video and now I’ll have to look for Mr Squeegees video. I never check this section of WCR.

My comments would be…

-Absolutely love the Boab Idea. I’ll will 100% be copying that next spring.

-Did anyone notice the subtitles… “This Brush works GREAT for screens!”. and yes it does.

-I didn’t understand your comment about how you would be scrubbing something over and over and you can still see it. I think you insinuated that a strp washer would have scrubbed it off but the brush couldn’t. I don’t think that’s even possible considering the barbecue window example you gave… What I do is, I have a leather pouch on my belt for a 1 inch scraper (or your boab might have a insert for it) Your 1" scrapper has to be extremely handy NOT in a pocket. When I’m scrubbing the window if there is something not coming off, I flick out the scrapper and it’s gone, fast and quick.
One thing I see people do is brush and then squeegee and THEN look for things to touch up. But I try to do all that while brushing. I can hear a piece of tape on the window and feel it (I think) through the brush. The glass is smooth, then your brush goes over something and it makes a noise. Scrap it now.

It’s a lot better to get the glass perfect during the brushing phase because as you know if you chamois in the middle of the window too much you have to do it over again. I try never to touch the middle of the glass and if I do it’s minimal and with a very clean chamois.

-The comment you made about the “down side” it’s too small for car dealer ship windows. I don’t actually think that’s a downside, it just might not be the right tool for the job. If the windows are already half clean and they’re huge, then like you say, a strip washer and the bigger the better is what you want. But if those windows are dirty, it’s gotta be a the brush. I’ve done commercial jobs where the windows look like panels. It might only be a 12" brush but it can handle the job, I can’t imagine how a strip washer would get it done.

I love poling with strip washers if the job calls for it and they can get the job done.

-I wouldn’t want to clean windows with a brush that had that handle on it. That’s right where I grab my brush. I’d leave that strictly for pole work.

One last thing, I love the home made boab… did I say that?

Mark/Mike is this the same brush you guys have been using?

Thanks

Yes it is. Look how cheap it is. I paid $30 where I bought it. :frowning:

Actually Mike, what Mark said was that there were some windows where he had to scrub so much it would have been just as quick to use a strip washer and scrape them. That was my finding as well. There are a select few windows where the brush does a quicker job than the strip washer. Unlike Mark though, I don’t carry around a bucket anymore. I use a bottle to rewet my strip washer and since the brush doesn’t hold as much water as the strip washer it made the brush less efficient for the way we clean windows.

Oh I see and I agree. I had a whole house of windows like that. It was because the CCU wasn’t done right.

Yes Tony, that is what I saying. Oh, I also carry a sprayer on a belt. If the windows are heavily soiled I’ll want a lot more water and will keep my bucket close at hand, also to clean up the brush/strip washer. But if this is an inside clean that I’ve done before, the sprayer on a belt is all I’ll need and I’ll leave the bucket setup at aa central location.

My answers are in bold.

Mark, 16 minutes on a brush. You consistently blow me away with your in-depth reviews on all stuff related to window cleaning & every minute worth watching. Thanks again.

Thanks Karl.

I was tempted to edit it down but couldn’t see omitting anything. Youtube only allows up to 15 mins so I had to go and sign up to Vimeo to host the video.

I watched it twice:D I wonder if anyone will ever make a video on a leather chamois now that WCR is going to start selling them:rolleyes:

Time to step up to the plate Mike.

I have tried to make one this was my experience…

Good demo, nice Macgyver modifications …

Just a heads up to all of you that liked what Mark had to say about the Nylex brush. We now have it in stock and you can add it to your next order and give it a try yourself. Just click the link below and it will take you to the brush in the store. Be sure to tell everyone what you think about it as well.

Nylex Hand Held Brush

I will start by saying that i ahve not tried the brush.
I just cant wrap my mind around going backward (my opinion) in the evolution of our tools. The strip washer replaced the brush and works really well in most circumstances. I could see having one of thes for special instances just like I have lots of tools for various scenarios. i can’t see working this into my regular, every day work now that I am accustomed to the boab that doesn’t look jury rigged, for instance.
I may have to get one to see what the fuss is about 'cause I trust Mark’s opinions. Was that Canadian distributor one that I know about?

And WCR is selling it for $10 less than what I paid locally. Now that’s a sweet deal!
