Window cleaning Chemistry

I used to purchase a concentrated solution called ( 64-1 ) at $45 a gallon. Over time i tried to figure out what was in it and see if i could duplicate it myself

I’m sure the measurements are not exact and there may be a few additives missing but i will be darned if my own recipe doesn’t work just as well and save me " A ton O $$$ "

Try it for yourself and tell me what you think, or if you have any suggestions feel free to recommend them.

My Recipe is quite simple

One of the Extra large bottle’s of Dawn soap used to refill smaller bottles

4 large bottles of 91% rubbing alcohol

Put about half of the large bottle of Dawn soap into a heavy duty one gallon plastic jug, top of with the bottles of rubbing alcohol and shake well to mix. this is your concentrate. i use about one ounce per three gallons of water maybe a little more and i always get comments on how nice it smells.

I have also tried putting a little Rain-x in it but i’m not sure i like the results, the window tends to have a high resistance and when i’m touching up i occasionally get little fiber being torn away from my Huck towels as if i was running it across a fresh piece of rubber.

If i add too much solution to my water i tend to have to do a bit of detail so with this stuff a little bit goes a long ways, Enjoy

Also post your own cleaning solutions and give us all a window cleaning edge

OK…is that a " wow thats great!! " or a " wow are you for real"

Since Dawn already has ethanol in it and you’re adding a large amount of isopropyl I am curious to know how fast it dries out.

haha, I guess a little of both- I mean, it’d be really cool if it was that simple, and you could get all the same benefits of say GG4, but, I guess I have my doubts. Power to you, though!

I’m thinking that were I to use that much alcohol on a window here, the window would be dry before I could grab my squeegee.

Can you post a link to the MSDS?

Ha, ha

Just went trough my one and only bottle of 64/1. I doubt I’ll buy another. I had to add dish soap to get my desired slide. If you add a glide to it, it’s not bad. Smells okay too. http://www.coastwidelabs.com/Products/MSDS/64%20to%201%20MSDS3000.PDF

I have to say you guys have all given me a lot to think about, i always thought 64/1 was great, i thought my personal mix was great, but now i have doubts, good doubts thanks to all of you.

Definably going to try some GG4, and see if i like it, also though my mix never dried out too fast because of the isopropel, i do have to watch the strength of my mix. too much in my water and i have to detail a bunch, not enough and i get squeegee chatter on the glass.

Thanks for you help,

I use dawn also when I’m out of Glass Gleam.
