Workers Comp or not?

Who carries Workers Comp for just themselves? What is your rate and what Ins. company is it through?

I don’t think workers comp covers the owner and family

Yeah, not sure about that one. You can get yourself disability insurance tho.

I didn’t think so either, but in NY (hate NYS) they give you the option of insuring just yourself if you don’t have any employees. Wasn’t that nice of them? So big companies who are afraid you will fall off your own ladder while cleaning their windows and claim you were actually employed by them and file a comp claim, now can require you to insure yourself. Did I say I can’t stand NY?
So, I was told the other day that I couldn’t bid, for a company who called me for a bid, because I don’t have Comp. for myself. And the windows are only first and second floor. They actually asked if I would need a lift. The really stupid thing is they are known for manufacturing lift vehicles and big Tonka type toys. You know them. You would think they would know of such a thing as a pole.

You can get work comp on yourself but disability will likely be better but you need to get it priced out

In Florida, sole proprietors and family businesses with no outside employees, or less than 3 employees can get a waiver from the State that will cover the requirement, if you are willing to go through the process.

I won’t put anyone to work without Worker’s Comp, not worth the risk

yes way better!

although one is looking at hundreds a month in premiums for a payout of 50% of personal income (via 1040 filings) coverage after 6 months for 5 years

then you layer with a short term policy that pays out after 3 months for 1 year or something like that

less expensive than work comp (in calif) and your agent and company is your advocate, way different than fighting with work comp to get help

also work comp is you can’t do any kind of job or work in anyway (all the dateline shows catching people working out or taking on other jobs) and are supposed to be an invalid

whereas private disability is about not being able to perform the job you insured yourself for

so:

long term policy
short term policy
aflac

then

car insurance
life insurance
homewoner’s insurance
health insurance

business liability insurance
work comp insurance

ugh, one can really get sick of insurance premiums!!!

In Kansas, my Work Comp only covers employees unless I specifically added myself, which would have nearly tripled my premium.

Problem with the exemption is IF something happens then you are not covered, but it does serve to protect the customer. Normal health insurance will not cover job related injuries either, so whether you are not required by company size (3 or less employees, self too) to have it, it is best to have it even as sole operator or you’re screwed if you fall off a ladder or injured in some other way. All the more reason to not discount prices.
