.com or .net?

who has a website that DOESN’T end in a .com?

Sorry meant to put .org or .net? for the title

.org is for a organization usually a non profit
try and get a .com that’s what people are used to

.com is better if you can find one that works for you. Much better known.

.com is what you want if you can find one you like. I just acquired icleansolarpanels.com (nothing up yet)

i have a couple of sites that end with .ca (Canada) and they rank fine. let’s put it this way, do a search for ‘Toronto window cleaning’ and I pretty much always show up on paage one. The .com equivivelent never shows up, why? Because they have nothing to do with window cleaning.

in this age of a gazilion and 1 web urls, the main two ways people are going to land at your site is because they did a web search and you came up right away or you told them your url via some form of marketing pc, ie: flyer, mailer, business card, truck sign, etc

Zero offense intended to .net owners but, blunt truth: there’s a stigma with a .net address, you should definitely aim for a .com address if you can get one. It’s subtle, but .net quietly says “I wasn’t important enough to get my own business name’s first tier domain.” The older crowd may not care as much, but the 40 and under crowd will. The .ca is very popular in Canada but for whatever reason .us never took off here.

Another option is .co… it’s dangerously close to .com though so it could cause confusion. It’s pretty new and not yet popular either.

I had the .net for my name, because someone had the .com, but I was able to acquire the .com

i’d say you were correct with any age person if they are tech savy. But the world is too huge to be able garantee a .com no matter who you are. I really don’t think someone will find you through a google search and decide not to do business with you based on your .com versus .net.

If you are dead set on maintaining your desired domain name I’d say go for it no matter if it has to be .net, .com, .biz or whatever. If I ran Joe’s Window Cleaning, I’d certainly settle for www.joeswindowcleaning.net if.com wasn’t available.

cyber squatter!

I don’t think anyone would just skip you for a .net address either, I just think a .com looks better and can add a little brand value. .Com is the better option if it’s available, if not then you do what you can. Usually you can play with a name enough to find a .com that works but you’re right, many are gone.

Huh?

at first you couldn’t get.com for your domain but then you did later, correct. Or did I misunderstand.

There are people who look to possess specific domain names and so they squat until the oportunity arrises to jump and snatch it up and often to resell it for profit. They are called ‘cyber squatters’. I was jokingly calling you that.

Lol, I thought you were talking about my geotag. Yep, I’m a cyber squatter

I ended up with .org. When I first did a web site years ago I did not know anything about the internet. A friend did it for me for free and the .com was taken. I hate having it as people always look puzzled when I tell them .com and then I have to explain. It has not hurt my business though just annoyed the crap out of me. Thats right a cyber squater!

.XXX

Just became available… I have been thinking about getting a couple of those… For some .com urls that I know I could never get.

Not to hijack the thread but do you think the stigma of a xxx domain would be severe?

IE: windowcleaning.xxx

thats available!

But windowcleaning.com <– was for sale for 100k !

hmm… my guess would be yes. its not available anymore…
