Does anyone know of anything that will remove this tarnished look from this door knob, I sure dont want to have to replace it. Thanks
If it’s brass something like brasso or a like polish

It is either painted or powder coated, I tried brasso and it did not work.
If it’s paint I doubt you can remove it

try #0000 steel wool and baby oil if it is metal you are cleaning. That will shine it up nice and brassy. But that doorknob looks like it has an artificial patina applied. Is the white stuff oxidation or paint residue?
This happens ALL THE TIME with the Schlage oil rubbed bronze finish. Take a metal polish, brasso is fine and polish. The polishing will take off some of the white. After the polishing, spray on some WD 40 and wipe off. The handle will be like new. For future homes with that style handle, you can take painters tape and tape them up. Then give them a quick wipe down with WD 40. There is no need to replace the handle, thus will work perfectly. Good luck

Not sure all I know is that it wasnt there before we did the house wash, I will try the #0000 wool and baby oil.
I will try the wd-40 first. Thanks for all the info.
what is in your house wash mix? I’ve been washing for years and have never seen this?
There tend to be a lot of these Schlage handles here. Most are under a covered porch areas so they haven’t been subject to rain, sun, etc. Even when rinsed with water only, the finish can do what is pictured. Ones that are on doors exposed to weathering will already have that appearance prior to washing. Getting them looking new is fairly easy and fast. We still tape them up as a precaution.
Neither have I, what’s your mix?
Mix is 2-3 gallons Sodium Hypochlorite a little fresh wash and water in a 5 gallon bucket, this house had very little mold and new gutters so I know we mixed it on the weaker side, I have only seen this a few other times but it was just because customers point it out, I assume there are more though, we are going to start masking these off.
I’ve never used fresh wash, I wonder if thats the cause??
What surfactant do you use?
elemonator from Bob at PTState
I am guessing that if fresh wash is the cause of that, elemonator would have a similar effect (or any surfactant for that matter). My guess is that bleach was the cause, more than the soap.
It’s not your chem. Plain water can even do this to this brand/finish handle. It doesnt matter if we are washing the house, deck or even an adjacent driveway, if these handles get wet they become dull and need to be cleaned up. We see it almost everyday. Only the Schlage brand rubbed bronze.

Not all surfactants are the same
I use chlorine which is much stronger than bleach and I’ve never had it happen
What does “i use chlorine which is much stronger than bleach” even mean?
Bleach is 3-6% SH and usually has other stuff in it, Chlorine is 10-12% with no additives, much stronger than bleach.
