Damn. Just got general liability quote of almost $1500 per year! Is this high? I was told it was due to my being located in New York State…and I’m a sole proprietor in Upstate!
Who gave you that quote?

The quote is from liberty mutual…and no, I’m not doing power washing.

$1800 per year in NJ for me. Its is a Cadillac plan though.e
My first policy (different company) was $500 a year, but the restrictions on it were ridiculous. Window cleaning only, 24 feet or under.
1600 or so a year for me. But I do mostly window tinting.

Man I’m glad I’m not doing business in those states. What is the coverage amount? I have a basic plan but it’s wayy under that. I’m at $380 with only 350,000 in liability. I know I should have more but nobody asks for it and I’m not breaking stuff all over the place so it’s good right where it is. Even a million would be around $500. Still a cheap price. I carry all my insurance through the same guy. Homeowners, three vehicles, and business liability so I think that’s helps too…
$2 million dollar commercial/residential no more than 4 stories high for $800 per year

Not bad I guess for 2 mill. Do you really need that much? I’m sure some guys do but that’s a lot. How can you possibly do that much damage? Just wondering?
Any kind of personal injury will add up mega quick. Heaven forbid you drop a ladder on someone, they’re paralyzed and require 24 hour care for the rest of their life, that 2 Million will disappear in a blink. It’s a very, very unlikely scenario. But in some business, somewhere, it’s happened to someone.
It could happen I guess. But my best insurance policy, to date, is don’t get hurt… I come from the old school, I guess, where we don’t have ACA to fall back on…
Maybe if I had more than two employees it would be worth it…
I think the real advantage of having a larger insurance policy, is the ability to bid on commercial properties that have stupid requirements for their contractors.
My focus is commercial contracts for retirement centers, dealerships, and the red bottling company. These people basically give you the account when they see my proposal

This. Pretty much anyone who asks for a copy of the insurance wants to see 1M or 2M on there before they’ll consider a bid.

That’s probably true but I’ve done quite a bit of larger jobs like hotels and bank chains and only a handful want my insurance policy on file. Usually it’s the smaller to medium size jobs that ask for it.
I had a homeowner ask me 3 times if my insurance covered the roof on his house if I were to break anything. I thought for a second and cleaned the windows from the inside upstairs.
Not sure if something happened in the past or he was setting me up to fail
