Retractable Scrapers

Picked up one of these at Lowes. Why doesn’t Ettore or Ungar make them? It sure beats dealing with blade covers, which I’ve found to be annoying. The Lowes scraper is cheap. I’d be willing to spend more for one of a higher quality.

I bought two retractable scrappers by triumph. Not very good quality in my opinion. After a few uses the retracting part would get stuck on one corner and I had to pull it down with my thumb. A little annoying but did get use to it. Still would prefer these then to have to deal with covers or securing them with velcro straps or buttons.

cant see the link.

if I’m on a N/C scrape everything job I want a 6" blade handy at all times and don’t need to deal with safety features. If the job changes and I need a blade I adjust accordingly.

It’s all I use. Z40 all day errrrday, quick draw out of my Henry holster. Amazing work flow is what it’s about.

We had way more injuries with the retractable scrapers, guys forget the blade is exposed, etc… Also seems the corners of the guard wear out quickly exposing the blade. At least with the replaceable cover you get in the habit of putting it on every time.

This is what I use no blade cover needed. After about six months you cut through it but sure saves on time.

these work good

I agree, however like Transparent I experience one corner sticking after a few uses. Maybe KARLRobinson has some ideas. He uses them as well.

i gave up on the retractable from Triumph for the reasons stated above. recently i bought one of these leather hammer holder to store a regular 6 inch scraper on my belt and its been just the ticket

How long ago was that? I remember the black ones were really tough to open but the redesigned gray ones are a breeze. We use them like crazy. Yeah, the corners wear down over time, but it’s rare that anyone ever nicks themselves. I find that taking them apart every couple of weeks to clean the slides keeps them working well for a long time.

BTW, the triumph blades are the best on the market. If you’re planning to do any serious scraping, triumph is the only option. Just sayin.

@caleb, I purchased the retractable blades about two months ago. After the first week the corner got stuck on me. I love these things and pretty quick on the draw but it does get annoying to have to pull the stuck corner down almost every time. I do agree the triumph blades are the best…stainless of course.

Hmmm, I wonder if you got a bad batch? I’ve gone through probably fifty of those scrapers over the last few years and don’t remember ever having a problem like what your describing. Maybe there’s a quality control issue there…

As for blades, I actually prefer the regular steel blades. The stainless are too thin and brittle, they snap on me all the time. Plus, they cost a lot more. At the rate we go through them we don’t really worry about the carbon steel blades rusting. They hold up to abuse much better than the stainless, IMHO.

I don’t trust the retractable one’s, I have cut myself enough times I want to make sure my blade is secure. I have been using one of these for the past few years and like them, I rarely use a blade and maybe pull it 2-3 times for an entire house for spot usage.

I was really glad when Triumph started coming out with the thicker blades .20 mm in stainless steel. The thin .15 mm used to drive me nuts because of bending the corners all the time. Once I determine whether or not it’s some crappy tempered glass I go agro with my triumph.

For years I have used the 4", either walmart or home depot/Lowes. Either clamp or retractable. My little favorite is the pro trim. Uses really thin blades like the old open top shaving razors. You can easily dry scrape for touch ups. Drawback is there is a small gap along corner so cannot det full corner with some frames. Tried an unger 4", Same design as the store bought ones. Upgraded to Triumph. MK3. It is worthless. Can only use reversed and then due to odd glass it hits here and there unless you push really hard. Got a replacement, same thing. Tried the retractable.Worked ok but then the slide would get hard to open so have to be careful when trying to slide it. Use a little oil to help make easier. I often just go back to the std 4" The 6" blades are good though. Last a long time. The cheapie blades work for a few windows but need to change out especially if using different chems. You need both sized. If the 6" begins to miss spots because of the glass you can go 4" The longer blade sometimes bridges. Is this normal for 6" blades. All 3 triumphs do this. That is like $50 down the drain, mot including blades. The holders from those stores work fine but I would get a better quality blade. Finding a hole match is tricky. I wanted a wagtail scraper but few are selling this now. If anyone has bought one and doesn’t like it let me know. I can use it.

All I use is triumph scrapers now with a scrapermate holster. I’ve never had a problem with one. If its bridging on you, try decreasing the angle and press a little harder.

Triumph retractable : best scraper on planet. Best blades too.

If it’s binding on you, it easy to take apart. Just clean the slides and put it back together.

We’ve been through probably 100 of them in the past 5 years.

Not new to using scrapers. Well over 400 plus ccu homes. Angles pressure. There is something with the blades. You can see a slight bow. If press to hard you run a risk of possibly catching debris. There is an uncomfortable pressure and glide. You can feel when you apply too much. Shouldn’t have to press that hard. 4’ never a problem. I can really only use the MK3 reversed

I’m not doubting your experience or anything, don’t be insulted by my comment as it wasnt my intention.

All I use is 6" scrapers and never had an issue. And for what its worth, the amount of pressure has little to do with fd. If that blade is on the glass hard enough to scrape anything off then its hard enough to loosen fd. You can dislodge it with a plastic scraper.

@wws
Interior have had luck with scrubber squeegee and scrubber. Just use scraper to sort of glide over to get the small paint specks. The exterior glass on many of the ext are different. Have to be scraped The 4" seems to do better. I can get the 6" to work a bit but have to press hard and with the debris, even mostly removed don’t want to risk it. Plus the glass isn’t feeling normal. I used a lot of soap but the glide is horrible. Really bad type cheap glass. Like rubber on rubber. You get that gritty feeling, odd to explain but the sound and feeling that tells you this glass sucks. With a 4 I just can practically fan it, Go to 6 and different story. I can use it reversed but not trust to put on a pole. Might be I need the carbon vice the steel. Now, the retractable seemed to work a lot better but not comfortable to buy anything but 4’ for the other s that do windows. If I have to work at getting it to work well then they will have problems and possibly damage as well. Knowing them they will ditch it and go right back to 4. I love that pro trim. Cement kicks its hinder but it is great for touch ups, way better than those small trim type razors but must use the TR100 unger blades carbon coated. I tried plastic scrapers before and they did not do well with the ext flecks. I did find a harder plastic type scraper. Tougher with a harder/sharper tip. If I can find it I will show pic cannot remember the site. It looked pretty durable and not like the plastic putty knife type ones. Hesitant to buy it but paint on interior has been getting better to remove so may try it. Always good to have another tool in the arsenal.
