Screen repair tutorial from Mark The Window Cleaner

Interesting just found it online. So did you mount two sides to your table and the other one is adjustable?

Yup, two sides are supposed to be fixed, the other two float.

How did you like it overall?

I like the jig, but I think I could some up with something a LOT cheaper.

What’s the best way to avoid screens bowing in while on site and no jig? In my defense this screen had major bowing issues prior to the rescreening.

Try bowing the two ends slightly opposite (bowed out) that way when you run the spline it will pull the ends back in and straight. Be very gentle when bowing the frame or it will bend and crack, hopefully this makes sense

Just sell them on a new screen they are simple to make by hand

Funny you mention this now , because I just had a person in my networking group that brought me 4 screens that need to be remade.

I approximately have a 12×30 shop behind my house that I currently use for storage of work and personal items. But I want to convert it into a screen fabrication shop.

The only problem is I’m not sure what to charge. I was thinking of charging him $25 for rescreening and $45 for fabricating new ones. Since he brings the screens to me. He’s a roofing salesman, that has access to a lot of screens due to damage from hail storms.

I really liked this tutorial. The 45° corner cut and using a brick to pre-set the screen tension have worked great for field repairs to avoid bowing and bunched up corners. How to Fix a Window Screen | The Family Handyman

The price for rescreening sounds good but I would bump up the price for creating a new screen.

What do you think of this pricing Scheme? I thought I was making good money an not ripping off customers.

Rescreening or replacing the screen cloth in your existing frames and replacing broken or missing hardware as necessary. There are many choices of screen cloths these include: fiberglass (charcoal or silver gray), Clear Advantage (best visibility), heavy duty fiberglass (black), and Pet Resistant (Black, Strongest).

How to figure your cost:
Measure the width and height in inches. Add the width and height inches together, and multiply by your choice of cloth price.

35¢ for fiberglass screen
45¢ for Clear Advantage

Thanks for your input. What would you charge for a new screen build?

Minimum $50 up to $65 and I know most screen guys in my area are at $75. I feel like you could definitely go with a pricing scheme like the one stated above but it also seems confusing to customers and would mean you almost always have to go give an in person estimate.

for that one i would be at $50-$65+ the screen needs to be made with 45 degree corners. that will be a little tricky if doing it by hand you need the corners that hold the frame together and match the frame color. im guessing you are going to home depot for the parts so i would go check if they have the parts and colors that you need before you tell the customer that you can build them a new screen.

I have been sourcing my screen mesh and parts from Lowe’s and Home Depot. There is a huge screen shop that repairs\fabricates screens here in Denver. They also sell material to public and contractors. When there becomes more of a demand I’ll buy my material in bulk from them. But, I did buy a screen jig from them.

As far as the screens go in the pic; only 2 of them need the 45 degree cut, and drill holes for springs. Probably reuse the corners. Originally, I was going to just cut with hack saw. But, I just bought a miter saw and stand; 4x8 particleboard for screen jig table

I think I will just charge this guy $50 a screen for the simple ones and perhaps $55-60 for the ones with angle cuts; as there’s potential for him bringing me a lot of screens to do.

I done aluminium mesh before, it is stronger than the fibreglass and yes i do agree that it does tear easy. I am in the middle of doing a job at this time. I did a couple of doors with pet mesh and reused the spline as it was still ok, however I’m doing these smaller screens and the spline is tattered and very old. Also they wanted aluminium screens in place of the fibreglass. The spline is quite small, the smallest I could find is 4.5mm. The groove of where the spline goes is quite hard to roll the spline in place and I’m afraid I might rip the screen. My question is: Is it possible that I can get smaller spline ie: 4mm or does it mean that aluminium is not supposed to go in that small groove. Is there another screen mesh that is stronger than fibreglass to fit smaller screens? Need help.
Thanks.

Hollywood

You can get smaller spline but from my sources your ordering a 38 pound roll. We use about 6 or 7 different spline sizes based off the screen being used and the frame

What is the best all around wheel size combination tool for screen repair? Any help would be great. Thanks

I have a solution to the bowing! I have been testing a prototype that was given to me in return for feedback. It honestly works! It will be launching soon check the Instagram its@ splineomatic
