Stack Ladder Junkies

You wouldn’t have to just break them down. That’s the beauty .
If I were you j would make the man an offer he even has half pieces.
These are tools you will have for as long as your a window cleaner. In my eyes a tool that is invaluable !!!

I’ve been doing this 16 years and I’ve never even owned an extension ladder. I love stack ladders.

And if I’m doing windows 30ft up over a hillside, that’s where the WFP comes in.

My main concern with stacks is walking around on mountainous landscaping with 4 pieces. I almost always lower the flies of my 24’ werner and shoulder it around here. I still take slips and falls sometimes. I don’t know how people work without levelers here. Most of my jobs involve a 8+" offset with my levelers.

I need to learn stacks. I’ve used them a few times, and found them awesome for any kind of corner-set, but 4 sections was a bit precarious feeling. The last thing I want to do is drop a $1000 ladder.

Yeah, I stocked up on half sections since they were going out. I even had to get a couple 4’ (or are the 5’? I forget) half sections that were a foot taller. We only use sections, they are the best hands down for window cleaning if you can use them properly. You get mad respect at our company when you can stack four and a half without the help of the wall with your eyes closed, only then can you be considered a top guy.

We call the half sections “cates”, so when we need four and a half, we say we need “four and a cate”. Get it ? Forinacate??? Sorry, stupid humor (but we love it).

Seriously though, the new guys are usually so scared of sections that I’m starting to consider getting some 30’ extensions. But regardless, for inside ladder climbs, how can you not use sections?

There are only a few scenarios that will truly suffer due to the lack of half sections, I say get the sections! You should get a 4-piece set.

And here I thought you were quoting me with the tracking number for my cate

If your concerned, just drop down to 2 or 3 sections, even one. In no time you’ll be real comfortable throwing them around. I hardly ever have to use 4 sections and the more you put em up and down, the easier it will get. Bringing them inside is almost like carrying in a 6 ft step ladder

This is the key. Stacks do feel very different from extension ladders. Everyone who uses them the first few times feels that way. But once you get used to them, chances are you’ll love them.

Some guys use a 8ft top section and do not use half sections. I suggested a half section to Seth Fensterstock and he and his guys hated it because they love using the 8ft top section.

Sectional are king. My extension ladder collects dust.

I actually had never thought about replacing a half section with an 8’ tip sections. I’ve never used the 8’ tip, but that makes pretty good sense to do that.

I have an 6 ft and 4 ft bases. Two 6ft middles. 6ft top and an 8ft top.

The 8ft top gets used the most on 1st floor residential by itself.

Yes !!! I don’t have an 8’ head piece , but that sucker would come in handy for 1st floor . Hmmm why did you do this to me. I need one

rivet0r, you can also build your own half piece: http://windowcleaner.com/vBulletin/wc-equipment-vehicle-setups/47652-rained-out-tomorrow-d.html

Alex, awesome brotha, thanks!

My new biggest concern is picking up a set and loving them, only for Metallic to bail on production. As far as I know, they’re the last ones left on this side… Is that right?

Yeah, they’re the last US mfg for sectionals that I know of, and I have a hunch they’ll eventually quit making them. But if you take good care of your set, it could very well last you the rest of your window cleaning career. Just stock up on replacement rivets in case they stop making those, too. As far as I can tell, the rivets are pretty much the only ‘wear’ item on these ladders.

To V or not to V. That is the question?

Haha, nice one. Definitely V. It opens up a whole new world of possibilities in ladder placement. Just watch a few of Dangerous Dave’s youtube vids on stack ladders, and you’ll see what I mean.

And the beauty of the v groove, is that the ladder can still be flipped around to use the rung side of the top piece. This allows you to set the top to ‘hug’ around a protruding aluminum frame, or even angle the ladder in to catch on a side frame that isn’t large enough to utilize the groove.

Homemade roller tip no v needed.

V-groove without a doubt

… Here’s my stack ladder setup, easy to set up, can use 4’ to 10’ sections.
