Storm windows the easy way. anyone use one of these?

i picked up a couple of these at the depot for about 4 bucks each, over in the tile section. Pop one on each side of the pane, unclip the sides, and pull straight back.

i HATE taking storms off, so ive been happy with this addition-- anyone do the same?

Funny your bring this up… I was playing with a bunch of the high rise suction cups yesterday and was thinking that if I cleaned a lot of storm windows I would probably use one. Good find @ $4

It’s a great way to help remove storms and to replace them. I’ve used those for years but the kind I use are for a heavier type of window , I would check to see what the weight limitation are for those…These are the ones I use (below), they are more commercial grade and are used by glass installation companies ;

Dange, I just bought 4 of those types yesterday for a job I have today. We’ve got a storm the size of my van to take off…no way I’d trust that lil’ yellow suction to take that on. The professional ones are rated for 125lbs EA! Though, they’re $65 each…

Hey Garrett where did you buy yours ? I need to get another one soon ! 65 is a good price…

I know you really need the commercial grade ones for window cleaning they are way more safer. Now I figure you’ll need 2 guys on one plate right… well be careful and work instinct !

That’s exactly what I have been using for years. There is also a bigger one that has double suction cups that I use for big storms.

Is it best to use 2 of these or just one and support the panel with the other hand? What do you recommend? I do alot of storms around here and have been muscling them. Need some of these asap.

Thanks

We have stopped removing oversized removable panels. Anything over 4’x4’ and we won’t remove it. Fortunately those are almost nonexistent in our service area.

Some “professional” models are rated less than 125lbs each:

Suction Cups - High Rise

I made the same exact call on Monday. Had a 6X8 exterior storm window on the second floor attached by 2 hinges at the top (on the inner side, of course). Both my helper and I didn’t see at as being a safe decision to do it. The homeowner wasn’t too happy about it, but when it comes to a very large piece of glass slicing the hell out of me because the rickety little screw holes at the top are rotted out, nope, no way, uh-uh, forget it.

Same here. I fell 20ish feet last year from trying to unlatch an exterior storm that was kinda stuck. Never again…

Is that why you have a patch on your eye?? Lol.

I’ve got one of the 125’s, but have no idea where it is. Never used it except for the homeowner who bought it. Then I bought it from him!

That’s the one I have.

I changed my avatar, dejay, so the good people out there know I have two functioning eyes. Don’t ask what else I’m missing, please… Very sensative… smiley face(with cigarette)

Howdy Yawl,

Let me clarify the suction cups in use in window cleaning…What the forum boss, pointed out is really used for doing boatswain chair work, they are used to pull you in the chair close to the glass and or to help you to stretch to reach glass…The first bunch below are those used to do boatswain chair work… They really aren’t designed to lift glass plates / framed glass windows to remove or install.

You might be able to lift a light weight piece of glass ergo a small table op but they aren’t designed for that.

The bottom suction cup is designed to lift heavy plates of glass and or framed glass window / storm windows.

Doing storm windows in our industry is very dangerous work and one should know what they are doing before they do it…Experince and knowledge is a much needed aspect to cleaning storm windows.

Old glass can be extremely dangerous because when it breaks it breaks into shards / long strip of glass, that can cut you deep and fast and could cut you clear to an artery which can cause one to bleed to death in minutes .

Lets all be safe and use the proper tools to do the work in our industry !

So, I can see it being useful in some situations, we clean A LOT of storms. I haven’t tried it, but jeez, I think it would slow me down. Enormous, ground level storms, it would surely have it’s place… However, not speaking of my style, I think it would be good for employees with a little less experience on your average storms, especially the sliders/triple track.

Don’t want to sound like the “been there done that kind of guy” but strictly for storms, I bought several of the cheap suction cups shown above about 8 years ago. Harbor freight for like $5 apiece.

These days I turn down storm work. I’ve broken 5 pieces of glass in 9 years and they have all been storms. There’s too much easy glass to mess around with those little devils. Just my opinion of course

Did the broken glass have anything to do with the Harbor Freight-quality suction cups?
