I think the sooner you can close the deal the better.
Should always try to close the sale on first call. Easier to handle objections face to face. If you don’t, next guy will.
There are two schools of thought on this and really both are right in their individual context. If you feel the customer is ready to ink the deal then by all means close it. However, in this day of reducing service budgets some managers will need to run the numbers and get approval from a board or an owner and this is best done by using an email proposal and a follow up system either by email or phone call.
Let the customer dictate this to a certain extent extent but be aggressive or you may lose the deal to a competitor.

Depends on the type of client, If its storefront/commercial - like John Martin Said, sometimes it’s a waiting game.
For residential absolutely close as quickly as possible - or someone else might take your lunch
I do resi only and I e-mail all my bids so it may take 24 hours before they get the bid. In our area there are so many who will take 3-4 days before they even look at the job. Because of this an e-mail bid works for us. Every area is different and every person has the potential to be different so I don’t think their is one right answer. I used to do written bids on site and hand the bid to the customer and sometimes we could close it right away and sometimes they wanted to look it over with their spouse and then decide. I personally have not seen any difference in the amount of bids accepted. I have noticed that when I get to meet the homeowner the likelihood of closing the job increases by a considerable margin. The other advantage to the e-mailed bid is that it saves me a lot of paper. I have only 1 sheet per bid to do a window count. I give all my customers copies off all my accord certs for insurance and references so I am saving a ton on paper and toner when I just e-mail the bid to the customer with the PDF versions of insurance certs. I also have an electronically stored record for easy reference to look-up in the future. Oh, and the best part is-Now I have their e-mail address so I can send them reminders about booking next time, specials or anything else.
I def try and close the deal face to face if possible. My close out rate is much higher f2f than email. You get to read the customers mood, establish a connection, gauge their price threshold, etc. I only offer to email the quote as a last resort, if I feel they are having second thoughts; this gives them more time to consider my pitch as well as price. But emailing does allow a second opportunity of contact, and to reinforce your sales pitch.
Personal pref in the end, and how confident you feel at the time.

In my experience if The owner is at home when I do the quote and if we don’t schedule the job right away most likely over 80% of the customers never call or they have excuses for not been ready to move on .
So do your best to close soonest possible and don’t drag the scheduling down the road

My first questions almost is when were you wanting to get this job done? sooner or later and once they answer that I let them know what I have available and ask if the first immediate opening works for them - some say well I need a quote first - then i simply point out my starting prices and the benefits of choosing to work with my company…basically learn to Always Be Closing. It really took me sometime to be comfortable and to control the conversation respectfully.
I try to close as soon as possible. If I don’t close onsite I follow up in a couple days if I haven’t heard back from them about scheduling them

Email works for us the best. Very seldom will someone want the price immediately. We send our emails with PDF out with in a couple hours of the walk thru. I just bid on a huge horse playground thing with tons of windows and we were $1000 over the highest price. We sent her all of our information with detailed descriptions how we were going to do the job through email. She loved it! She said that if we can come down a little bit we got the job. She also said she did not appreciate the chicken scratch hand written quotes from the other companies. I’ve noticed with the people that have money growing on trees appreciate and want the extraordinary companies that stand out and have the best reviews. I eventually will start having a mobile printer that can dish out a copy version of all my reviews and estimates immediately after walk thru. doing that with no chicken scratch will be extraordinary!!!
I also e-mail all my quotes and it works out great. I include a copy of all our Insurance and Reference info as e-mail attachments for their approval. It is neat and tidy with no chicken scratch. Looks professional and we close a very high percentage of our quotes.
How do you guys present your references? I’ve thought about doing that along with my insurance certificate.
Just this past month I’ve started to email my quotes along with insurance certificate, references would also be a nice addition to my emailed estimates.

We send our references along with our Insurance certs. They are all PDF’s as attached files.
It sounds like you both use something like ProPosal.
…
Just curious how you present them? I don’t have any references written down in a solid format, that’s something I would have to get together. Also, how does a file like that actually look?
This is all very new to me and I’m trying to stand out and above the other guys just lowballing jobs and doing crap window cleaning work
